Exmoor
Exmoor is loosely defined as an area of hilly open moorland in west Somerset and north Devon in South West England, named after the River Exe the source of which is situated in the centre of the area, 2 miles NW of Simonsbath. Exmoor is more precisely defined as the area of the former synonymous ancient royal hunting forest, officially surveyed 1815–1818 as 18,810 acres in extent.
Bridgetown, Devon
Bridgetown is a part of Totnes, Devon. It is divided from Totnes itself by the River Dart, and came into existence as a result of the first bridge being built across the river at Totnes. The river is in a valley, with Bridgetown on the south eastern slope opposite Totnes.
Brendon Hills
The Brendon Hills are composed of a lofty ridge of hills in the East Lyn Valley area of western Somerset, England. The terrain is broken by a series of deeply incised streams and rivers running roughly southwards to meet the River Haddeo, a tributary of the River Exe. The hills are quite heavily cultivated unlike their neighbouring upland areas of Exmoor and the Quantock Hills. Over the centuries they have been mined for minerals, notably ironstone from which iron is extracted for making steel.
Brompton Regis
Brompton Regis (formerly known as Kingsbrompton) is a village and civil parish in the West Somerset district of Somerset, England about 5 miles north-east of Dulverton. It is situated on the River Haddeo in the Brendon Hills within the Exmoor National Park, close to Wimbleball Lake, a water supply reservoir constructed in the 1970s and completed in 1979. According to the 2001 census the village had a population of 439.
Minehead A.F.C
Minehead A.F.C. is an English football club based in Minehead, Somerset. The club are currently members of the Somerset County League Premier Division, and play at the Recreation Ground. The club is affiliated to the Somerset County FA.
Tarr Steps
The Tarr Steps are a medieval clapper bridge across the River Barle in the Exmoor National Park, Somerset, England. They are located in a National Nature Reserve about 2.5 miles south east of Withypool and 4 miles north west of Dulverton. A typical clapper bridge construction, the bridge possibly dates to around 1000 BC. The stone slabs weigh up to 1-2 tons apiece. According to local legend, they were placed by the devil to win a bet. The bridge is 180 feet long and has 17 spans.
Holnicote Estate
Holnicote Estate is a National Trust property consisting of 5,026 hectares of Exmoor National Park situated in West Somerset, England. The property was donated to the National Trust in 1944 by Sir Richard Thomas Dyke Acland, 15th Baronet; it had been in the Acland family since 1745. Holnicote Estate contains more than 240 kilometres of footpaths and bridleways.
Tithe Barn, Dunster
The Tithe Barn is a 14th century tithe barn in Dunster, Somerset, England. It has a cruciform plan. The east front has central double doors in heavy oak with a chamfered frame. It is a grade II listed building. The barn, which was originally part of a Benedictine Dunster Priory, has been much altered since the 14th century and only a limited amount of the original features survive.
Wimbleball Lake
Wimbleball Lake on Exmoor in Somerset, England, is a water supply reservoir constructed in the 1970s and completed in 1979. The 161 feet high dam is of concrete buttress construction and impounds the River Haddeo to provide a water storage capacity of some 21,000 megalitres over an area of 374 acres . Aggregate for the dam came from a quarry at Bampton and sand from Uffculme. These were combined to give a pinkish tinge to blend in with the local geology.
Luccombe
Luccombe is a village on the south coast of the Isle of Wight near Shanklin. There is some indication of Bronze Age settlements on the top of the nearby hill of Luccombe Down. The Luccombe area features some spectacular cliffs and scenery. It is a popular site for hang gliding and paragliding if there is an Easterly wind of around 12mph and it is low water, and on good days flights to Sandown and back can be achieved.
Coleridge Way
The Coleridge Way is a 36-mile footpath in Somerset, England. It was opened in April 2005, and follows the walks taken by poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, to Porlock, starting from Coleridge Cottage at Nether Stowey, where he once lived. The footpath is waymarked.
Ruby Country
Ruby Country is the name given to the rural inland hinterland of north-west Devon, UK. It covers 45 parishes around the market towns of Holsworthy and Hatherleigh. These two towns were at the centre of the 2001 Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak, and although agriculture was directly affected, most local businesses suffered considerable financial hardship.
Hurlstone Point
Hurlstone point is a promontory of land between Porlock Weir and Minehead in the Exmoor National Park on the coast of Somerset, England. Hurlstone Point marks the boundary between Porlock Bay and Blue Anchor Bay in the Bristol Channel and is on the South West Coast Path. There is a coastguard lookout shelter on the point. The rocks, including a large slab known as "coastguard wall" are popular with climbers. In 2007 a cyclist was rescued after falling 40 feet down the cliff.
Clatworthy Reservoir
Clatworthy Reservoir is situated near Clatworthy in the Brendon Hills on the edge of the Exmoor National Park in west Somerset, England. It is run by Wessex Water and has a capacity of 5,364,000 cubic metres, supplying some 200,000 homes. It impounds the head waters of the River Tone and the surrounding area is used for walking and fishing. Clatworthy Camp, an Iron Age hill fort is situated on a promentary above Clatworthy Reservoir.
Barlynch Priory
Barlynch Priory (also known as St Nicholas's Priory and sometimes spelled Barlich Priory) in Brompton Regis, Somerset, England was Augustinian priory founded, by William de Say, between 1154 and 1189 and dissolved in 1537. In 1524 the priory was at its largest with nine cannons. The only visible remains are some fragments of walling attached to Barynch farmhouse, which have been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No 182).
Dulverton Rural District
Dulverton was a rural district in Somerset, England, from 1894 to 1974. It was created in 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894. In 1974 it was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 and responsibilities transferred to West Somerset. The parishes that were part of the district included: Brompton Regis, Brushford, Dulverton, Exford, Exmoor, Exton, Huish Champflower, Skilgate, Upton, Winsford and Withypool and Hawkridge.
Williton Rural District
Williton was a rural district in Somerset, England, from 1894 to 1974. It was created in 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894. In 1974 it was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 when it became part of West Somerset.
Dunster Priory
Dunster Priory was established as a Benedictine monastery around 1100 in Dunster, Somerset, England. The first church in Dunster was built by William de Mohun who gave the church and the tithes of several manors and two fisheries, to the Benedictine Abbey at Bath. The priory, which was situated just north of the church, became a cell of the abbey. The church was shared for worship by the monks and the parishioners, however this led to several conflicts between them.
Hawkcombe Woods
Hawkcombe Woods is a National Nature Reserve near Porlock on Exmoor, Somerset, England. The 101 hectares woodlands are notable for their lichens, heath fritillary butterfly, red wood ant colonies, dead wood invertebrates and ancient pollards. They are part of the North Exmoor Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Watchet Harbour Lighthouse
The Watchet Harbour Lighthouse is a marine navigational aid marking the entrance to a Marina within the historic town of Watchet, in Somerset, England. The cast iron lighthouse is approximately 22 feet in height and has a red hexagonal tower with white lantern, and green lens. The lighthouse is a harbour navigation mark and does not emit a flashing light associated with traditional lighthouses.
Washford transmitting station
Washford transmitting station is a medium wave broadcasting station and low-power digital terrestrial television relay near Washford, Somerset. It was built in 1933 and uses as antenna a T-antenna between two 152 metres tall guyed masts separated by a distance of 159 metres. Originally the station used cage antennas around each mast. The station uses the frequencies 882 kHz with 100 kW, 1089 kHz with 50 kW and 1215 kHz with 50 kW.
The Queens Hall Minehead
The Queen's Hall in Minehead was built in 1914 on the sea front of Minehead as a theatre for films and live performances. The building suffered major damage in the storms of 1996 and was restored to full use as an amusements and then a public house. It currently operates under its original name, "The Queen's Hall," as a pub.
Tropiquaria
Tropiquaria Zoo is a small tropical house and zoo in West Somerset, England. It is located 16 miles from Taunton and 9 miles from Minehead. It is based in a 1930's art deco BBC Radio transmitter hall, which is now a grade 2 listed building. A zoo has been run from this site since the early 1990s. With a mainly African theme to the tropical hall and aquarium there are a large number of outside animal enclosures as well.
Washford Radio Museum
Washford Radio Museum is situated within the Tropiquaria wildlife park in Washford, Somerset England. It is based in a 1930’s art deco BBC Radio transmitting station, which is now a Grade II listed building.
