Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale

The Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester in North West England. It is named after its largest town, Rochdale, but spans a far larger area which includes the towns of Middleton, Heywood, Littleborough and Milnrow, and the village of Wardle. The borough was formed in 1974 as part of the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972 and is an amalgamation of six former local government districts.

Rochdale

Rochdale /ˈrɒtʃdeɪl/ is a large market town in Greater Manchester, England. It lies at the foothills of the South Pennines on the River Roch, 5.3 miles north-northwest of Oldham, and 9.8 miles north-northeast of the city of Manchester. Rochdale is surrounded by several smaller settlements which together form the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, population 206,500. Rochdale is the largest settlement and administrative centre, with a total population of 95,796.

Rochdale railway station

Rochdale railway station is a multi-modal transport hub in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England. It consists of a Northern Rail-operated heavy rail station on the Caldervale Line, and an adjoining light rail stop which is the terminus of Metrolink's Oldham and Rochdale Line. The original heavy rail element of the station was opened by the Manchester and Leeds Railway in 1839 (for economical reasons) 0.5 miles to the south of Rochdale town centre. The Metrolink element opened in February 2013.

Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers

The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, founded in 1844, was an early consumer co-operative, and the first to pay a patronage dividend, forming the basis for the modern co-operative movement. Although other co-operatives preceded them, the Rochdale Pioneers' co-operative became the prototype for societies in Great Britain.

Rochdale (ancient parish)

Rochdale was an ecclesiastical parish of early-medieval origin in northern England, administered from the Church of St Chad, Rochdale. At its zenith, it occupied 58,620 acres of land amongst the South Pennines, and straddled the historic county boundary between Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire. To the north and north-west was the parish of Whalley; to the southwest was the parish of Bury; to the south was Middleton and Prestwich-cum-Oldham.

Wardleworth railway station

Wardleworth railway station served the township of Wardleworth in Rochdale, in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale in Greater Manchester, England, from 1870 until closure in 1947. Between here and Rochdale station was the Roch Valley Viaduct, now demolished.

Drake Street Metrolink station

Drake Street Metrolink Station was a planned station in Phase 3b of the Manchester Metrolink, to be located in Rochdale between the Railway Station and the bus station. In March 2011 the plans were scrapped by the transport bosses who believed it would be too close to Rochdale Station and could serve as an efficiency saving to allow the construction of Kingsway Metrolink station.

Rochdale Pioneers Museum

The Rochdale Pioneers Museum is housed in the building where the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society started trading on 21 December 1844. The museum is regarded as the birthplace of the modern co-operative movement. The museum is a recreation of the original shop, containing its rudimentary furniture, scales, items that were sold at the store, etc.
