Mapledurham Lock

Mapledurham Lock is a lock and weir situated on the River Thames in England. The lock was first built in 1777 by the Thames Navigation Commissioners and the present lock dates from 1908. Despite its name, the lock is located in the Berkshire village and civil parish of Purley-On-Thames on the south bank of the river, rather than in the Oxfordshire village of Mapledurham on the other side of the river. The weir stretches across the river, in both counties.

1947 Thames flood

The 1947 Thames flood was worst overall 20th century flood of the River Thames, affecting much of the Thames Valley as well as elsewhere in England during the middle of March 1947 after a severe winter. The floods were caused by 117 mm (4.6 inches) of precipitation (including snow); the peak flow was 61.7 billion litres of water per day and the damage cost a total of £12 million to repair http://www. environment-agency. gov. uk/news/1721484. Appletree Eyot is an island in the River Thames at Reading, Berkshire, in England. The island is on the reach above Caversham Lock about 3km from Tilehurst, a suburb of Reading. Poplar Island is very close to it. The two islands are in the middle of the river, so that navigation goes to each side of them according to the rules of the river. Appletree Eyot is densely covered by trees.
