Foss Dyke
The Foss Dyke, or Fossdyke, connects the River Trent at Torksey to Lincoln, the county town of Lincolnshire, and may be the oldest canal in England that is still in use. It is usually thought to have been built around 120 AD by the Romans, but there is no consensus among authors. It was refurbished in 1121, during the reign of King Henry I, and responsibility for its maintenance was transferred to the city of Lincoln by King James I.
A156 road
The A156 road runs from the A57 and heads north to Gainsborough. The road runs entirely within Lincolnshire right next to the border with Nottinghamshire. It is a single carriageway for its entire length apart from one small stretch at Torksey Lock where the A1133 joins from Newark-on-Trent. It is approximately 11 miles long. The road starts just west of Saxilby where it branches of from the A57 from Lincoln. It heads northwest through the village of Fenton.
Cottam, Nottinghamshire
Cottam is a village in Nottinghamshire 8 miles east of Retford. The village church of Holy Trinity is Norman in origin, restored in 1869 and again in 1890 with the addition of a bell turret. To the south of the village is Cottam Power Station with 8 cooling towers, built between 1964 and 1968.
