Isle of Axholme Rural District
Isle of Axholme was a rural district in Lincolnshire, Parts of Lindsey from 1894 to 1974. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 based on the Lincolnshire parts of the Thorne rural sanitary district and two parishes of the Goole RSD (covering the northern part of the Isle of Axholme). After the abolition of Crowle Urban District and taking in some parishes from the Gainsborough Rural District in 1936, it covered all of the Isle.

At the time is was a small event catering only for the local area. Over the years the show has grown and changed with the nature of what the local people wanted and expected.
Axholme Charterhouse
Axholme Charterhouse, North Lincolnshire is one of the ten medieval Carthusian houses (charterhouses) in England. It was established in 1397/1398 by Thomas Mowbray, Earl of Nottingham. The house was centred around a pre-existing chapel at Low Melwood in the Isle of Axholme. The full name of the house was The House of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary The house was suppressed as part of the dissolution of the monasteries in June 1538.

Hyrst Priory
Hyrst (or Hirst) Priory was a priory just south of the town of Crowle in the Isle of Axholme, Lincolnshire, England. The cell of Hyrst was built on land granted by Nigel d'Albini to the prior and convent of Saint Oswalds, Nostell, probably early in the twelfth century. Roger de Mowbray confirmed the gifts of his father. It seems likely that there never was more than one canon living there taking charge of the lands.
