The Broads

The Broads are a network of mostly navigable rivers and lakes in the English counties of Norfolk and Suffolk. The Broads, and some surrounding land, were constituted as a special area with a level of protection similar to a National Park by The Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Act of 1988. The Broads Authority, a Special Statutory Authority responsible for managing the area, became operational in 1989.

Martham Broad

Martham Broad is a broad (or lake) and National Nature Reserve on the River Thurne in the English county of Norfolk. The broad is located within The Broads National Park about 2 km north of the village of Martham. The nature reserve is maintained by English Nature and is part of the Upper Thurne Broads and Marshes SSSI. It is owned and managed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust. It comprises 590,000 m² of open water, reed and saw-sedge fen, and it is a shallow, brackish lake.

Winterton Dunes

Winterton Dunes is an extensive dune system on the east coast of Norfolk, England, which has been designated as a National Nature Reserve of 109 ha. Winterton Dunes is within the Norfolk Coast AONB. The site is unusual in that it shows greater ecological similarities to the dune systems of the Baltic - which support acidic plant communities - rather than the dunes on the North Norfolk Coast - where the sand is calcareous.

Horsey Mere

Horsey Mere is one of the Norfolk Broads in the east of England; it is one of the more northerly broads close to the North Sea coast. It is reached by Hickling Broad and the River Thurne. The nearest settlements are Horsey and West Somerton. Horsey Mere is a Site of Special Scientific Interest owned by the National Trust, as is Horsey Windpump.

Winterton Ness

Winterton Ness is an area of foreland on the North Norfolk coast of England. Winterton Ness is located to the north of the village of Winterton-on-Sea between grid reference TG489216 in the north to TG506181 to its south. Technically it is a narrow cuspate foreland with a high obtuse angle between its two shorelines. A number of studies appear inconclusive as to the nature if erosion or, conversely, accretion of sediment in the area.
