Cinque Ports
The Confederation of Cinque Ports is a historic series of coastal towns in Kent and Sussex. It was originally formed for military and trade purposes, but is now entirely ceremonial. Hythe Town F.C. is an English football club based in Hythe in Kent, and playing in the Isthmian League Division One South in the English football league system. They were FA Vase semi-finalists in 1990. The club is nicknamed The Reds. The team plays its home matches at the Reachfields Stadium, Fort Road.
Hythe railway station (RHDR)
Hythe station is the northern terminus of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway and although smaller than New Romney, it is an impressive facility with curved platforms and overall roof, loco release road, former engine shed now an independent engineering works, signalbox with 16 lever frame, and a turntable. Of the three platforms, only numbers 2 and 3 are normally used for arrivals and departures, number 1 being used mainly for stock storage as it has no loco release facility.
Saltwood Castle
Saltwood Castle is a castle in Saltwood village—which derives its name from the castle—1 mile (2 km) north of Hythe, Kent, England. The castle is known as the site where the plot was hatched to assassinate Thomas Becket (1118–1170). More recently, it became the home of the art historian Lord Clark of Saltwood (1903–1983), then his son Alan Clark (1928–1999), a minister in Margaret Thatcher's government.
Seabrook, Kent
Seabrook is a small coastal village in Kent, England. The village lies in-between Sandgate and Hythe. The Royal Military Canal starts here. There is a Church of England Primary School and a local pub "The Fountain". The promenade leading from Seabrook to Hythe is very popular with walkers and joggers in the summer months.
Saltwood Miniature Railway
Saltwood Miniature Railway was a 7.25 gauge miniature railway which first opened in Sheffield, but subsequently relocated to Saltwood in Kent, England. Until its final closure in 1987 the Saltwood Miniature Railway was an important part of community life in Saltwood. In wider terms it came to hold a historically important position as the oldest extant miniature railway in the world.
Centuries, Hythe
The house named Centuries in Hythe, Kent, England is the birthplace of Hamo de Hethe, b.1275, who became the Bishop of Rochester in Kent, England in 1330. The original house was built in 1107 by a family named Noble, believed to be Hamo's ancestors. The simple two story structure with a large cellar is built of local rag-stone and was, at that time, in a preeminent location on the docks in Hythe, on the corner of the 12th century road to Canterbury called Clyme Hill, via Saltwood Castle.
Hythe railway station (SER)
Hythe railway station was a railway station serving the town of Hythe in Kent and was positioned just after the railway crossed Blackhouse Hill. On the Sandgate Branch line the station had two platforms, and a brick built station building. It was ceremonially opened on 9 October 1874, and opened fully the next day. Being inland of the town it served the station was never popular.
