Thames and Medway Canal
The Thames and Medway Canal is a disused canal in Kent, south east England, also known as the Gravesend and Rochester Canal. It was originally some 11 km long and cut across the neck of the Hoo peninsula, linking the River Thames at Gravesend with the River Medway at Strood.
Higham railway station, Kent
Higham railway station is in the hamlet of Lower Higham in North Kent. The village of Higham is about a mile to the south. Train services are operated by Southeastern. (Not to be confused with the closed station at Higham in Suffolk. ) The ticket office, on the 'up' side, is situated in the substantial station building.
Hoo Junction
Hoo Junction is a rail yard on the North Kent Line. It is located near the village of Higham, Kent and also Shorne Marshes; it is operated by EWS. The yard is situated between Gravesend and Higham railway stations, at the junction with the freight-only single track line to the Hoo Peninsula.
Gads Hill Place
Gads Hill Place in Higham, Kent, sometimes spelt Gadshill Place and Gad's Hill Place, was the country home of Charles Dickens, the most successful British author of the Victorian era. Today the building is the independent Gad's Hill School. The house was built in 1780 for a former Mayor of Rochester, Thomas Stephens, opposite the present Sir John Falstaff Public House. Gad's Hill is where Falstaff commits the robbery that begins Shakespeare's Henriad trilogy.
Cobham Woods
Cobham Woods is an area of woodland, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and part of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), located between Strood, Cuxton and Cobham in Kent. The SSSI includes the arable land in the Ranscombe Farm country park and nature reserve. The woodland is largely sweet chestnut coppice with some coniferous plantations, while the parkland is mature woodland, with some clearings, of oak, sweet chestnut, beech, hornbeam, and other species.
Darnley Mausoleum
The Darnley Mausoleum, is a Grade I Listed Building, situated in Cobham Woods, Kent. It was designed by James Wyatt for the 4th Earl of Darnley according to detailed instructions in the will of the 3rd Earl of Darnley. It was never used for interments. The woodland is part of the parkland laid out by Humphry Repton, and is 1.6 km from the North Downs Way. The mausoleum is a Grade I Listed Building.
Uralite Halt railway station
Uralite Halt was a halt between Milton Range Halt and Cliffe station on the Hundred of Hoo Railway. Built to serve the British Uralite works, it opened in July 1906 and closed on 4 December 1961. The halt was demolished soon after closure.
