Isle of Thanet
The Isle of Thanet lies at the most easterly point of Kent, England. While in the past it was separated from the mainland by the nearly 2,000 feet wide River Wantsum, it is no longer an island. Archaeological remains testify to the fact that ancient peoples lived here. Today, it is a tourist destination, but it also has a busy agricultural base. The Port of Ramsgate serves the Continent.
RAF Manston
RAF Manston was an RAF station in the north-east of Kent, at grid reference TR334663 on the Isle of Thanet from 1916 until 1996. The site is now split between a commercial airport Kent International Airport (KIA) and a continuing military use by the Defence Fire Training and Development Centre (DFTDC), following on from a long standing training facility for RAF firefighters at the Manston base.
Battle of Wippedesfleot
The Battle of Wippedesfleot was a battle in 466 between the Anglo-Saxons, led by Hengest, and the Britons. It is described in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle thus: 465: Her Hengest 7 Æsc gefuhton uuiþ Walas neah Wippedesfleote 7 þær . xii. wilisce aldormenn ofslogon, 7 hiera þegn an þær wearþ ofslægen, þam wæs noma Wipped. 465: Here Hengest and Æsc fought together against Welsh (= Britons) near Wippedesfleot and there slew 12 Welsh leaders, and one of their thanes was slain, whose name was Wipped.
Sandwich Bay, Kent
Sandwich Bay is a long sweeping inlet of the sea between Ramsgate and Deal, on the east coast of Kent, England. The coastal area consists of sand flats with their associated salt marshes and coastal sand dunes. The Sandwich Flats stretch for about five miles (8 km) along the coast. The coastal habitats are of very high ecological importance. Most of the bay bears national and international nature conservation designations.
Defence Fire Training and Development Centre
The Defence Fire Training and Development Centre (DFTDC, formerly FSCTE Manston) is where Britain's Ministry of Defence trains its firefighters. It occupies part of a former Royal Air Force base near the village of Manston in the southeast corner of England. The remainder of the former RAF Manston is now part of Kent International Airport, a civilian airfield.
Hugin (longship)
The Hugin is a reconstructed Viking longship that is located at Pegwell Bay in Ramsgate, Kent, England. The boat was built in Denmark from where it was sailed by 53 Danes to England in 1949. The ship landed at Viking Bay in Kent, before being moved to its current site. It was a gift from the Danish government in commemoration of the 1500th anniversary of the arrival of Hengist and Horsa to the country in 449. In 2005 the ship underwent repairs The ship is a replica of the Gokstad.
Richborough Power Station
Richborough power station was a power station close to the mouth of the River Stour near Sandwich, on the east coast of Kent. It operated from 1962 to 1996; the towers were demolished in 2012. It was built on land within the Port of Richborough but being on the northern edge its site lies mostly within the neighbouring parish of Minster, Kent. BFL Management Ltd, the current owners of the site plan to bring it back into use as the £750 million Richborough Energy Park.
St Augustine's Cross
St Augustine's Cross is a stone memorial in Kent, in a fenced enclosure on the south side of Cottington Road, west of Cliffs End, in Pegwell Bay, Thanet, about 2 miles west of Ramsgate, 3 miles north of Richborough Roman Fort, and 12 miles east of Canterbury, in the parish of Minster. The cross was erected in 1884 to commemorate the arrival of St Augustine in England in AD 597.
