Borthwood Copse
Borthwood Copse, near Sandown, Isle of Wight, England is a piece of woodland owned by the National Trust and is a fragment of the medieval forest which covered most of the eastern end of the Island. Borthwood Copse was originally a royal hunting ground. It was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1926 by Frank Morey. He had purchased it a few years earlier to preserve it for wildlife. Subsequent additions have added to the land and it now covers a total of 60 acres .
Knighton, Isle of Wight
Knighton is a hamlet near to Sandown on the Isle of Wight. It is usually pronounced as Kay-nighton by local people, to avoid confusion with the larger, homophonic village of Niton, near Ventnor. Knighton is situated under Knighton Down and has historically always been a part of the parish of nearby Newchurch. Knighton consists of little more than a collection of farm houses, most now turned to residential use. The only amenity in the settlement is a post-box.
Amazon World Zoo
The Amazon World Zoo is located between Newport and Sandown on the Isle of Wight, England. The zoo mostly features exotic animals from South America, including Giant Anteaters, Tamarins and Marmosets, Ocelots and Parrots. It also is home to the biggest collection of toucans in the United Kingdom. Despite holding nine species, including the rare Plate-billed Mountain-toucan, no serious attempts are made to breed their toucans, and none have access to outdoor aviaries.
Isle of Wight Garlic Festival
The Garlic Festival is a fundraising event that is held annually on the Isle of Wight. The Garlic Festival has been held every year since 1983. From 1985 to 2006, the Newchurch Parish Sports & Community Association organised the annual Garlic Festival, achieving their major fund raising aims. It is now hosted by The Garlic Festival Ltd. It has recently drawn 25,000 visitors a year. Throughout this time the festival has been organised by a succession of dedicated volunteers.
Alverstone Marshes
Alverstone Marshes is a 83.8 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the Isle of Wight, notified in 1951. The Alverstone Marshes are the site of a wetland restoration project by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. It is also noted for water voles.
Winford, Isle of Wight
Winford is a hamlet on the Isle of Wight, that since the 1950s and in particular in the late 1970s has seen considerable housing development. The local shop in Forest Road closed some time ago, but tourist attractions with gift shops are situated nearby. The pipes supplying Winford with water are being replaced as part of a massive upgrading of the infrastructure supplying water to the Isle of Wight.
Newchurch (Isle of Wight) railway station
Newchurch railway station, was an intermediate station situated on the edge of Newchurch village on the line from Newport to Sandown incorporated by the Isle of Wight and Newport Junction Railway in 1868, opened in 1875 and closed 81 years later. Despite its rural location a “respectable” number of families alighted at the simple station, "little more than a wooden hut”. The nearest location to the site is a bungalow, Newchurch Crossing.
Queen's Bower
Queen Bower is a large village on the Isle of Wight, England that has effectively merged with Winford and Apse Heath. It lies to the north of Borthwood, a National Trust property, and gets its name from a hunting lodge for hunting deer in Borthwood, owned in the 13th century either by Isabella de Fortibus — last "Queen" of the Isle of Wight, or King Edward Longshank's queen after he took over the Island. The only commercial property in the area is the Queen Bower Dairy.
Mersley
Mersley is a farming hamlet on the Isle of Wight. Mersley is in Newchurch Parish. Mersley is home to a large garlic farm which is part of the Isle of Wight Garlic Festival in nearby Newchurch, held annually since 1983 and now drawing 25,000 visitors a year. This garlic farm has also been investigated for inappropriate pesticide use in the past. Renowned potter Molly Attrill works out of a converted barn in Mersley.
