East Cowes Castle
East Cowes Castle, located in East Cowes, was the home of architect John Nash between its completion and his death in 1835. Nash himself was the designer of the site, and began construction as early as 1798. He was interred on the grounds. The structure gained renown for its complex castellation, its gothic-style turrets and towers, and for the notable individuals who came to be Nash's guests there, including the Prince Regent and J.M.W. Turner, who painted a picture of the location.
Medina Wharf Halt railway station
Medina Wharf Railway Station was a private halt between Cowes and Newport on the Isle of Wight that provided a way for workers at the nearby wharf to get to work before the road was laid. No shelter for its few passengers was ever provided and it never appeared on a public timetable. The trackway is now part of NCN route 23. Additionally, a non passenger carrying coal train transported coal from the siding via the halt to Ryde.
Mill Hill (Isle of Wight) railway station
Mill Hill Railway Station is a disused station on the Isle of Wight. Itwas first seen as the down train from Cowes emerged from the 208 yard tunnel along the curving platform, the sweep still visible in 2005 on a small area of grass where the demolished station once stood. Unlike many Island railway stations Mill Hill was busy at the beginning and end of each working day, depositing and picking up hundreds of workmen from shipyards.
Cowes railway station
Cowes Railway Station took pride in being the “prettiest station on the Garden Isle”. Opened in 1862, the very first on the island as part of the inaugural “Cowes and Newport” railway it expanded to three platforms as the railway branched out towards Ryde in the years before the motor bus began to diminish trade. In its time prosperous enough to have a WH Smiths bookstall latter years were considerably leaner as more and more people took their holidays abroad.
