St Albans Rural District
St Albans was, from 1894 to 1974, a rural district in the administrative county of Hertfordshire, England. The district was formed by the Local Government Act 1894 from the area of the existing St Albans rural sanitary district. An elected rural district council replaced the rural sanitary authority which had consisted of the poor law guardians of the area. The rural district comprised an area surrounding St Albans, but did not include the city, which was an independent municipal borough.
Museum of St Albans
The Museum of St Albans is a local museum in the city of St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. The museum was founded as the Hertfordshire County Museum in 1898. The museum presents the history of St Albans from the end of the Romans onwards. The medieval gallery covers Saint Alban, who was the first Christian martyr in Britain, together with St Albans Abbey that was founded on the site where he was martyred. Outside there is a small wildlife garden with a pond.
First Battle of St Albans
The First Battle of St Albans, fought on 22 May 1455 at St Albans, 22 miles (35 km) north of London, traditionally marks the beginning of the Wars of the Roses. Richard, Duke of York and his ally, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, defeated the Lancastrians under Edmund, Duke of Somerset, who was killed. York also captured Henry VI, who appointed him Constable of England.
Second Battle of St Albans
The Second Battle of St Albans was a battle of the English Wars of the Roses fought on 17 February 1461, at St Albans. The army of the Yorkist faction under the Earl of Warwick attempted to bar the road to London north of the town. The rival Lancastrian army used a wide outflanking manoeuvre to take Warwick by surprise, cut him off from London, and drive his army from the field. The victors also released the feeble King Henry, who had been Warwick's prisoner, from his captivity.
Radio Verulam
Radio Verulam 92.6 FM is a Hertfordshire based non-profit community radio station run by Verulam Community Radio Ltd (VCRL). The station is staffed entirely by volunteers, including station manager Phil Richards and over 70 volunteer technical and production staff. Until April 2010, Radio Verulam was based in Victoria Street. The studios are now in Hatfield Road, the station has a coverage area designated as a 5 kilometres radius from the transmitter in St Albans.
