Gosport
Gosport /ˈɡɒspɔrt/ is a town, district and borough situated on the south coast of England, within the county of Hampshire. It has approximately 80,000 permanent residents with a further 5,000–10,000 during the summer months. It is part of the South Hampshire conurbation and lies on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour opposite the City of Portsmouth, to which it is linked by a pedestrian ferry.
Haslar Marina
Haslar Marina is located inside Portsmouth Harbour, on the south coast of England, just to the west of the entrance. It can be easily identified by the bright green lightvessel Mary Mouse II permanently moored to the outside of its breakwater. The lightship contains a small bar and restaurant, as well as one set of shower, toilet and laundry facilities. (Others are located elsewhere in the marina. ) Visitors' berths are near the entrance by the lightship.
St Vincent College
St Vincent College is a small co-educational sixth form (16-18) college located in Gosport, Hampshire, England. The majority of students come from the surrounding towns including Gosport, Fareham, Stubbington and Winchester. The nearby Gosport Ferry link with Portsmouth also allows students from that city to attend. The college has around 1,200 full-time students; it also caters for older "Access" students.
A32 road
The A32 is a road in Hampshire, southern England, that links Gosport and Alton. Starting at Gosport, facing Portsmouth, it travels north via Fareham, Wickham, Droxford, before joining the A31 road near Alton. The road is 29.2 miles long from the seafront at Gosport to the roundabout with the A31 near Alton, and has entirely non-primary status. Despite its non-primary status, the road forms the main access to the town of Gosport.
Royal Navy Submarine Museum
The Royal Navy Submarine Museum at Gosport is a museum tracing the international history of submarine development from the age of Alexander the Great to the present day, and particularly the history of the Submarine Service from the tiny Holland 1 to the nuclear-powered Vanguard class submarine. It is sited here due to HMS Dolphin shore-establishment.
Priddy's Hard
Priddy's Hard is an area of Gosport, in Hampshire, England now being developed for housing with part of the site retained as a museum. However, for some two hundred years it was a restricted-access site; first becoming a fort and then an armaments depot for Royal Navy and British Army weapons, explosives and other stores.
HMS Alliance (P417)
HMS Alliance is a Royal Navy A-class, Amphion-class or Acheron-class submarine, laid down towards the end of the Second World War and completed in 1947. The submarine is the only surviving example of the class, having been a memorial and museum ship since 1981.
Forton Lake
Forton Lake. A locality in the town of Gosport, Hampshire. It is within the grounds of St Vincent College. The locality is the subject of a painting by Martin Snape which hangs in the town hall. Forton Lake was the subject of a detailed archeological survey in 1997, and more recently the focus of the Forton Lake Archaeology Project, run by the Nautical Archaeology Society and Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology, from 2006 to 2008.
Royal Hospital Haslar
Founded in the reign of King George I, the Royal Hospital Haslar in Gosport, Hampshire, was one of several hospitals serving the Portsmouth Urban Area, but had previously been the country's foremost - and ultimately last - military hospital. Its military status was withdrawn in 2007, and those military personnel remaining joined the Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (MDHU Portsmouth) at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, Portsmouth.
HMS St Vincent (Gosport shore establishment)
HMS St Vincent was a shore establishment of the Royal Navy, located in Gosport, . The name was given to the barracks and training establishment in Gosport in 1927, after the one that been set up aboard the old first rate HMS St Vincent in 1862. The new HMS St Vincent was commissioned on 1 June 1927, originally like its predecessor as a training establishment for boys and juniors.
Explosion! Museum of Naval Firepower
Explosion! is the Museum of Naval Firepower situated in the former Royal Naval Armaments Depot at Priddy's Hard, in Gosport, Hampshire, England. The museum tells the story of naval firepower from Gunpowder to the Exocet missile. The museum has a waterside coffee shop which looks out on to the original 18th century camber dock.
Burrow Island
Burrow Island (also known as Rat Island) is a tidal island in Portsmouth harbour. At low tide a spit connects it with Priddy's Hard. It has been suggested that the name dates from the 17th century and is derived from being within the then borough of Portsmouth. In between 1678 and 1679 a fortification named Fort James was constructed on the island under the direction of Bernard de Gomme. It took the form of a square tower 19ft tall.
