Kingsway tramway subway

The Kingsway Tramway Subway is a cut-and-cover Grade II Listed tunnel in central London, built by the London County Council, and the only one of its kind in Britain. The decision in 1898 to clear slum districts in the Holborn area provided an opportunity to use the new streets for a tramway connecting the lines in the north and south. Following the pattern of tramways in New York and Boston, it was decided to build this as an underground connection.

British Museum tube station

British Museum tube station was a station on the London Underground's Central Line, located on Bury Place, close to the British Museum in Bloomsbury, central London, England. The station has not been in use by the general public since 1933; Holborn tube station, less than 100 yards away, providing services instead.

High Holborn

High Holborn is a road in Holborn, central London, which forms part of the A40. It starts in the west as a turn off Charing Cross Road, near St Giles Circus, and runs past the Kingsway and Southampton Row, and becomes Holborn at its eastern junction with Gray's Inn Road. The nearest London Underground stations are Tottenham Court Road, Holborn, and Chancery Lane, all on the Central line which runs beneath High Holborn.

Kingsway Hall

The Kingsway Hall, Holborn, London, built in 1912, was the home of the West London Mission of the Methodist Church, and eventually became one of the most important recording venues for classical music and film music. Among the prominent Methodists associated with the Kingsway Hall was Donald Soper, who was Superintendent Minister at the West London Mission from 1936 until his retirement in 1978.

Ship Tavern, London

The Ship Tavern is an inn at the western corner of Lincoln's Inn Fields, behind Kingsway, London. Established in 1549, at the height of the English Reformation, when Catholicism became illegal, it was used to shelter Catholic priests and hold secret Catholic services. It was originally in Whetstone Park, which was notorious for its gambling houses.

Red Lion Square

Red Lion Square is a small square on the boundary of Bloomsbury and Holborn in London. The square was laid out in 1684 by Nicholas Barbon, taking its name from the Red Lion Inn. According to some sources the bodies of three regicides - Oliver Cromwell, John Bradshaw and Henry Ireton - were placed in a pit on the site of the Square. By 1720 it was a fashionable area: the eminent judge Bernard Hale was a resident.

It is a tied house, being owned by the Samuel Smith Brewery of Tadcaster, Yorkshire.
