Compton Castle

Compton Castle is a fortified manor house in the village of Compton, about 5 miles west of Torquay, Devon, England. The castle has been home to the Gilbert family for most of the time since it was built. It has been a National Trust property since 1951. The original undefended manor house was built in the mid-14th century and consisted of a hall flanked by solar and service rooms at each end - these were rebuilt in the later Middle Ages.

Beacon Hill transmitting station

The Beacon Hill transmitting station is a telecommunications facility located at Beacon Hill, Devon, England. It includes a guyed mast (Beacon Hill A) and a free-standing lattice tower, both of which support various antennas. In 2007 a third guyed lattice mast was constructed at the site to provide mediumwave transmissions for Gold (Exeter/Torbay), although those broadcasts have subsequently been discontinued.

Paignton Zoo

Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, is a zoo in Paignton, Devon, England. The zoo is part of South West Environmental Parks Ltd which is owned by the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWCT). It is a combined zoo and botanic garden that welcomes over half a million visitors a year. WWCT also runs Living Coasts in Torquay and Newquay Zoo in Cornwall. All three are registered charities. Paignton Zoo has a collection of approximately 2,000 animals representing nearly 300 species.

Preston, Devon

Preston is a suburb located in the northern part of Paignton in Devon. Preston is a popular destination for family holidays and has two main beaches; Hollicombe, a red sandy beach with cliffs and rock pools, and Preston Sands with rock pools, beach huts and facilities. At low tide it is possible to walk between Preston Sands and the adjoining beaches at Paignton. Preston had a railway station called Preston Platform briefly between 1911 and 1914.

Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust

Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWCT) is a registered charity, set up to run Paignton Zoo after the death of its founder, Herbert Whitley, who established the zoo on his estate at Primley, Torquay in Devon in the 1920s. WWCT also owns runs several local nature reserves in Devon, including Slapton Ley. Since 2003 it has owned and operated Newquay Zoo and Living Coasts.

Church of St Mary, Collaton St Mary

The Church of St Mary, in the village of Collaton St Mary in Devon, was built between 1864 and 1866 in memory of Mary Maxwell Hogg, teenaged daughter of the Rev John Roughton Hogg, owner of the nearby Blagdon Barton estate, and granddaughter of hymnwriter and vicar Henry Francis Lyte.
