Ilsington
Ilsington is a parish situated on the eastern edge of Dartmoor, Devon, England. It is one of the largest in the county, and includes the villages of Ilsington, Haytor Vale, Liverton and South Knighton.
Haytor
Haytor, also known as Haytor Rocks, Hay Tor, or occasionally Hey Tor, is a granite tor on the eastern edge of Dartmoor in the English county of Devon. It is at grid reference SX757770, near the village of Haytor Vale in the parish of Ilsington.
South Dartmoor Community College
South Dartmoor Community College (SDCC) is a co-educational academy school located in Ashburton, Devon, England. The number of students on roll is 1,650. The school also has a sixth form centre and has become a Specialist Sports College with Training School Status.
River Lemon
The River Lemon is a 16-km-long river in the county of Devon in south-west England. It rises on the south-east side of Dartmoor near Haytor, joins with the River Sig and the Langworthy Brook at Sigford, then passes the village of Bickington. Lower down, it is joined by the Kestor Brook and it then flows through the woods in Bradley Valley, past the manor house of Bradley, and through the town of Newton Abbot where it flows through a 400-metre-long tunnel below the town centre.
Haytor Granite Tramway
The Haytor Granite Tramway was a tramway built to convey granite from Haytor Down, Dartmoor, Devon to the Stover Canal. It was very unusual in that the track was formed of granite sections, shaped to guide the wheels of horse-drawn wagons. It was built in 1820; the granite was in demand in the developing cities of England as masonry to construct public buildings and bridges.
Yarner Wood & Trendlebere Down
Yarner Wood & Trendlebere Down in Dartmoor, Devon, England is a woodland managed by Natural England. The woodland is part of the East Dartmoor Woods and Heaths National Nature Reserve. The entire area is 777 acres while Yarner Wood is 365 acres . Since 1985 the site has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Many types of tree grow in Yarner Wood including oak, birch, scots pine, larch and beech. It is home to buzzards, sparrow hawks, nightjars and Pied flycatchers.
Sigford
Sigford is a small hamlet in the Parish of Ilsington, on the eastern edge of Dartmoor, Devon, England. It is situated at the confluence of three rivers, although the name of the settlement refers to just one of these, the River Sig. The other two rivers are the Lemon and Langworthy Brook. Upstream from Sigford on Langworthy Brook are a number of old arsenic and tin mines, and at times the river water can appear bright red.
Pullabrook Halt railway station
Pullabrook Halt was a railway station opened in 1931 by the Great Western Railway to serve the hamlet of Pullabrook that lies between Bovey Tracey amd Lustleigh in West Devon, England. Opened as Hawkmoor Halt after Hawkmoor Hospital, originally known as Hawkmoor County Sanatorium, a specialist hospital founded in 1913 as a pulmonary tuberculosis sanatorium. It was renamed Pullabrook Halt by the British Railways Board in 1955, a few years before closure.
