Derwent House, Matlock

Derwent House is a historic building in Matlock in Derbyshire, England, originally the home of the important Knowles family in the 17th century. The original estate included several buildings surrounding what is now known as Derwent House, including one which is believed to be one of the oldest buildings in Matlock, dating from circa 1670, predated only by the bridge over the River Derwent.

Matlock railway station

Matlock Railway Station is a railway station owned by Network Rail and managed by East Midlands Trains. It is located in the Derbyshire town of Matlock in Derbyshire, England. The station is now currently the terminus of both the Derwent Valley Line from Derby and Peak Rail who operate heritage services to Rowsley South. Both lines are formed from portions of the Midland Railway's main former line to Manchester. Through running is technically possible but is not done in normal service.

Riber Castle

Riber Castle is a 19th century Grade II listed country house situated in the hamlet of Riber on a hill overlooking Matlock, Derbyshire. Known locally as "Smedley's Folly" because of the difficulty of getting water to the hill summit, it was built by John Smedley in 1862 as his private home. His wife lived in it until her death. It is built of gritstone from a local quarry (Derbyshire is well known for its quarrying) which was pulled up the 200 metre high hill by a series of pulleys.

Matlock Cable Tramway

Matlock Cable Tramway was cable tramway that served the town of Matlock between 28 March 1893 and 30 September 1927. The tramway ran between Matlock railway station and the Hydro Spa Hotels of Smedley's and Rockside. One of the tramway's directors, Job Smith got the idea for a steep-gradient tram for Matlock while in San Francisco in 1862. The principal purpose of the tramway was to serve the Hydro Spa Hotels, bringing customers from the railway station near the River Derwent.

Matlock Riverside railway station

Matlock Riverside was the terminus of Peak Rail, a preserved steam railway of approximately 4 miles in length. For many years Peak Rail had planned to run trains into Matlock station, shared with the main line from Derby. The station is no longer used by regular services but has been retained as a run-round loop for demonstration goods trains and other special occasions. The station was built in 1991 due to problems negotiating with British Rail to run into the station at Matlock at that time.

Great Masson Cavern

The Great Masson Cavern, Derbyshire, England, is one of the two caves at the Heights of Abraham. It is notable for its lack of stalactites and stalagmites, as the cave is coated in a clay-like substance that inhibits deposition. However, it still has some rock formations such as "the Owl" and "the Rabbit". It was first opened to visitor viewing in Victorian times and had been mined for fluorspar prior to the opening to visitors.

Great Rutland Cavern

The Great Rutland Cavern is a small cave and one of the two at the Heights of Abraham, Matlock, Derbyshire. It consists of a narrow passage and a chamber leading in to the Nestus Grotto. Sometimes a face of sunlight can be seen through holes in the rock which is called the devils face. At the end of the tour there is a display on what it was like mining in the 19th century. It was first opened to the public in 1812 and was then known as 'Nestor mine'.

Cawdor Quarry

Cawdor Quarry is a dis-used quarry in Matlock, Derbyshire. Much of it is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Peak District is renowned for its quarrying, and stone from Cawdor Quarry was used in the construction of both Hyde Park Corner and the Thames Embankment in London. Around 2000, the quarry land was purchased by the supermarket giant Sainsbury's who proposed the building of a new supermarket by the spring of 2002.
