Thirlmere
Thirlmere is a reservoir in the Borough of Allerdale in Cumbria and the English Lake District. It runs roughly south to north, with a dam at the northern end, and is bordered on the eastern side by the A591 road and on the western side by a minor road. Thirlmere was constructed in the 19th century by the Manchester Corporation to provide the burgeoning industrial city of Manchester with water supplies.
River Rothay
The Rothay is a spate river of the Lake District in north-west England. Its name comes from Old Norse and translates literally as the red one. This has come to mean trout river. It rises close to Rough Crag above Dunmail Raise at a point about 1542 feet (470 m) above sea level. Its catchment area covers Grasmere Common including Easedale Tarn, the southern flanks of Fairfield, and several of the fells to the east of Dunmail Raise, including Great Rigg, Rydal Fell, Scandale Fell and Heron Pike.
Helm Crag
Helm Crag is a fell in the English Lake District situated in the Central Fells to the north of Grasmere. Despite its low height it sits prominently at the end of a ridge, easily seen from the village. This, combined with the distinctive summit rocks which provide the alternative name 'The Lion and the Lamb', makes it one of the most recognised hills in the District. Alfred Wainwright wrote of Helm Crag that "The virtues of Helm Crag have not been lauded enough.
Dunmail Raise
Dunmail Raise is a hill in the English Lake District, the highest point (at 781 feet or 238 metres) of a pass on the Keswick-Kendal road, the A591, to the south of Thirlmere reservoir on the way to Grasmere, in the Lake District National Park. To its east is the ridge dominated by Helvellyn and Fairfield, and to the west lies the High Raise massif. A large cairn there is reputed to be the burial mound of Dunmail, king of Cumbria, after whom the pass is named.
Red Tarn
Red Tarn is a small lake in the eastern region of the English Lake District, in the county of Cumbria. It is high up on the eastern flank of Helvellyn, beneath Striding Edge and Catstye Cam. It lies at an altitude of 718 metres (2,356 feet), with a depth of 25 metres (82 feet).
Grisedale Tarn
Grisedale Tarn is a tarn in the Lake District between Fairfield and Dollywagon Pike. It is the legendary resting place of the crown of the kingdom of Cumbria, after the crown was conveyed there in 945 by soldiers of the last king, Dunmail, after he was slain in battle with the combined forces of the English and Scottish kings. Grisedale Tarn is around 1,770 ft in altitude and has a depth of around 110 ft. It holds brown trout, perch and eels.
High Crag (Helvellyn)
High Crag (Helvellyn) or just High Crag is a mountain in the Lake District National Park in the Helvellyn range in the Eastern part of the Lake District in North West England. High Crag has a Height of 884 m (2900 ft). It is in between Dollywaggon Pike and Nethermost Pike. It is also a part of the Great Helvellyn range.
Wythburn Church
Wythburn Church is located in an isolated position by the A591 road on the east bank of Thirlmere, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican church in the deanery of Derwent, the archdeaconry of West Cumberland, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with those of St Mary, Threlkeld, and St John, St John's in the Vale. The church has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building. The poet William Wordsworth described it as a "modest house of prayer".
