Birdoswald
This article is about the farm at Birdoswald, for the Roman fort, see Banna (Birdoswald). Birdoswald is a former farm in the civil parish of Waterhead in the English county of Cumbria. It stands on the site of the Roman fort of Banna.
Milecastle 48
Milecastle 48 (The King's Stables), one of the milecastles on Hadrian's Wall, is situated just outside the village of Gilsland in Cumbria immediately adjacent to the Tyne Valley Line. It has been known locally as "The King's Stables" for over 100 years but recently the heritage industry has begun to call it Poltross Burn Milecastle. The milecastle measures 18.5m east to west by 21.3m north to south, substantially larger than many other milecastles.
Gilsland Spa
Gilsland Spa is the present-day name of a hotel at Gilsland, Cumbria, England. It is named from the sulphurous spring which issues from a cliff below the hotel. The original hotel was called The Shaws, from an Old English word meaning a small woodland, and was built in the 1740s, although the site and its surrounding farmland have been known by this name since at least 1603.
Popping Stone
The Popping Stone is a group of three rounded boulders in the Irthing Gorge near the town of Gilsland. It was not always this shape, however, and photographs from before 1870 show a single, much larger stone that must have been drastically altered soon after this date. Nearly all written references to the Popping Stone mention various traditions associated with courtship and marriage proposals, and usually repeat the legend of (Sir) Walter Scott's proposal to Margaret Carpenter there in 1797.
Mumps Hall
Mumps Hall was a seventeenth-century inn on the Cumbrian side of Gilsland. It has become famous because Walter Scott used its evil reputation, and that of its landlady Tib or Meg Mumps (based upon Margaret Teasdale) in his novel Guy Mannering. The inn is not named in the novel, but Scott revealed his use of its reputation in the notes he added to the Magnum Opus edition of his Waverley novels. The building he described was not, however, the present-day Mumps Hall.
Poltross Burn
The Poltross Burn is a tributary of the River Irthing. The burn rises on Denton Fell and flows north-east, joining the Irthing at Gilsland. The well preserved Roman Milecastle 48, known locally as The King's Stables, stands on the west bank. A 19th. century water mill within the village ground corn using the burn as a source of power.
Upper Denton
Upper Denton is a small village and civil parish in the north of Cumbria, England about 1 km north of the A69 road linking Haltwhistle and Brampton. The village is situated on the line of the Roman Stanegate which ran from Corbridge to Carlisle. Just 1 km to the north across the river Irthing is Birdoswald fort on Hadrian's Wall. Nearby villages include Gilsland, Greenhead and Lanercost.
Nether Denton
Nether Denton is a scattered settlement and civil parish in rural Cumbria, situated about 12 miles north-east of Carlisle, by the A69 road. St. Cuthbert's Church at Nether Denton is built at the site of a Roman fort, around 0.5 miles south of Hadrian's Wall on the Stanegate road. The present building dates from 1868-70, but there has been a church on the site since the 12th century.
