1913 Ais Gill rail accident
The Ais Gill rail accident occurred on the Settle-Carlisle Railway in the north of England on 2 September 1913. The proximate cause of the crash was a signal passed at danger, but there were a very large number of contributing factors.
Wild Boar Fell
Wild Boar Fell is a mountain (or more accurately a fell) in Mallerstang on the eastern edge of Cumbria, England. At 708 metres, it is either the 4th highest fell in the Yorkshire Dales or the 5th, whether counting nearby High Seat (709 m) or not. (In fact neither of these are, at present, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, although there are plans to extend its boundaries in the near future to include Mallerstang).
1995 Ais Gill rail accident
The 1995 Ais Gill rail accident occurred near Aisgill, Cumbria, at about 18:55 hrs on 31 January 1995 when a class 156 Super-Sprinter was derailed by a landslide on the Settle-Carlisle Railway line and was subsequently run into by a similar train travelling in the opposite direction. The conductor of the first train, Mr Stuart Wilson was fatally injured in the collision.
Pendragon Castle
Pendragon Castle is a ruin located in Mallerstang dale, Cumbria, close to the hamlet of Outhgill, at grid reference NY781025. It stands in an atmospheric spot above a bend in the river Eden, overlooked by Wild Boar Fell to the south-west and Mallerstang Edge to the east.
Eden Sike Cave
Eden Sike Cave is a cave located in Mallerstang, Yorkshire, England. The main entrance to the cave, where the water from the cave emerges, is too tight for most normal bodied people to enter. However, about 100 ft up the fell there is a small shakehole at NGR SD 782 970 and at an altitude of 1,300 ft . In the bottom of the shakehole is a hole through which can be seen a stream. Downstream is a small passage with a distinct excess of water and a noticeable shortage of air.
Swarth Fell
Swarth Fell is an approximately 1 mile (1.5 km) stretch of high ground situated to the south of Wild Boar Fell, of which it is a continuation. It is mostly within Mallerstang, Cumbria, but the boundary between Cumbria and North Yorkshire runs along its length, just to the west of the highest points.
Gregory Chapel
Gregory Chapel is one of the high points of the fells on the border between Cumbria and North Yorkshire. The summit is marked by a nearby sheep shelter and an unusual and conspicuous cairn - taller and more rectangular than most others locally. (This may, perhaps, be the origin of the curious name "chapel"?) The main rock in the area is limestone, with Millstone Grit outcrops on the tops.
