RAF Twinwood Farm
RAF Twinwood Farm is a former World War II airfield in England, located 4 mi north of Bedford. For the majority of the war the airfield was home to RAF night fighters.
Oakley (Bedford) railway station
Oakley railway station was built by the Midland Railway in 1857 on its extension from Leicester to Bedford and Hitchin. It was closed to passengers in 1958 and closed completely in 1963. The station buildings remain in a dilapidated state though the goods yard is used by a haulage company. About a mile (2 km) north of the station is the point where the Midland installed its first troughs to allow locomotives to pick up water.
Sharnbrook railway station
Sharnbrook railway station was opened in 1857 by the Midland Railway to serve the village of Sharnbrook in Bedfordshire, England. It was on the Midland's extension from Leicester to Bedford and Hitchin. It was situated near to Sharnbrook Summit. Here, originally there was a 1 in 119 gradient from the south taking the line to 340 feet above sea level. Around 1880, the line was quadrupled, with the new goods tracks taken through Sharnbrook Tunnel.
Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre
Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre is an immigration detention centre at Milton Ernest in the Borough of Bedford in Bedfordshire. It opened on 19 November 2001 and was built to hold up to 900 people making it the largest immigration detention centre in Europe at the time. Since opening in 2001 has been dogged by controversy. In February 2002, it was gutted through a fire, reopening in September 2003. Throughout its operational period a number of hunger strikes and riots have occurred there.
Pavenham Osier Beds
Pavenham Osier Beds are managed as a nature reserve by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. They lie south of Pavenham on the banks of the River Great Ouse, in the county of Bedfordshire. An Osier bed is where historically willows were planted and coppiced to produce withies which were used for basket making, fish-traps, and other purposes. The willow species salix viminalis was typically grown for this purpose.
Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, Clapham, Bedfordshire
Church of St Thomas of Canterbury (also Clapham Parish Church, or Thomas à Becket) is a parish church and Grade I listed building in Clapham, Bedfordshire, England. It became a listed building on 13 July 1964. Though the church can be traced back before A.D. 1000, there is no record of the original patron saint, Thomas Becket having been so well accepted. The church is built in the Saxon style, possibly early 10th century. There are narrow semi-circular-headed windows.
