Uzhhorod
Uzhhorod or Uzhgorod is a city located in western Ukraine, at the border with Slovakia and near the border with Hungary. It is the administrative center of the Zakarpattia Oblast, as well as the administrative center of the surrounding Uzhhorodskyi Raion within the oblast. The city itself is also designated as its own separate raion within the oblast. Museum of Folk Architecture and Life, Uzhhorod
Museum of Folk Architecture and Life is an open-air museum located in Uzhhorod, Ukraine. It features over 30 traditional structures collected from villages across Zakarpattia Oblast, the Ukrainian province of which Uzhgorod is the capital. According to Michael Benanav of The New York Times, "the museum's centerpiece is 16th-century St. Michael's Church, with a roof and onion-domed steeple covered in wooden shingles.
Uzhgorod Synagogue
The Uzhgorod Synagogue was dedicated in 1910. It was built in a flamboyant Romantic style, boldly intermingling Byzantine and Moorish elements. Since World War II the building has housed the Regional Philharmonic Society with the Transcarpathian Folk Choir served as Uzhgorod’s concert hall, prized for its acoustics.
Uzhhorod railway station
The Uzhhorod Railway Station (Ukrainian: Залізнична станція "Ужгород") in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, consists of two railway stations: the Central Railway Stations and the Suburban Railway Station. The railway station also serves as the port of entry on the Slovakia–Ukraine border for freight transportation. The rail border checkpoint is part of the Chop customs. The complex was opened to the public in October 2004. It is situated on Heorhiy Kirpa Square in Uzhhorod.
Uzhhorod Castle
Uzhhorod Castle is an extensive citadel on a hill in Uzhhorod, Ukraine. It was built in a mixture of architectural styles and materials between the 13th and 18th centuries and figured heavily in the history of Hungary. The very name of Uzhhorod/Ungvár refers to the castle, translating as "the Uzh castle". The earliest stone buildings on the site of the castle may be dated to the 13th century. Charles I of Hungary gave the castle grounds to his Italian supporters from the Drugeth family.
Greek Catholic Cathedral, Uzhhorod
Holy Cross Cathedral is a Ruthenian Catholic cathedral in Uzhhorod, Ukraine. It is dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The Baroque church was built in 1646 at the behest of the Jesuits from funds donated by the Drugeth noble family. It sustained some damage during Rákóczi's War of Independence. After the Society of Jesus was suppressed in 1773, Empress Maria Theresa allowed the Greek Catholics to take possession of the building.
