Summary
Sukhothai was the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam in the 13th and 14th centuries. It has a number of fine monuments, illustrating the beginnings of Thai architecture. The great civilization which evolved in the Kingdom of Sukhothai absorbed numerous influences and ancient local traditions; the rapid assimilation of all these elements forged what is known as the 'Sukhothai style'.

The Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns, located in the Sukhothai and Kamphaeng Phet Provinces of Thailand, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that holds immense historical and cultural significance. This site encompasses the remains of the ancient city of Sukhothai, which was the capital of the Kingdom of Sukhothai from the 13th to the 15th centuries.
History:
The Kingdom of Sukhothai, founded in 1238, marked the beginning of the Thai nation. Under the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, Sukhothai flourished as a center of political, religious, and artistic development. The city became renowned for its innovative administrative system, which emphasized the welfare of the people and promoted cultural exchange.
The architectural style of Sukhothai was characterized by the use of laterite and brick, with intricate stucco decorations. The city was divided into five zones, including the royal palace, religious complexes, and residential areas. The temples, such as Wat Mahathat and Wat Si Chum, showcased the exquisite craftsmanship of the time.
Current State:
Today, the Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns provide a glimpse into the grandeur of the ancient kingdom. The site covers an area of approximately 70 square kilometers and includes the central zone of Sukhothai, as well as the associated towns of Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet.
The central zone of Sukhothai contains the most significant remains, including the royal palace, temples, and city walls. The iconic Buddha statues, such as the standing Buddha of Wat Si Chum, continue to inspire awe among visitors. The well-preserved ruins offer a unique opportunity to explore the architectural and artistic achievements of the Sukhothai period.
Si Satchanalai, located about 55 kilometers to the north, was a satellite town of Sukhothai. It served as a strategic outpost and played a crucial role in trade and defense. The town features numerous temples, including Wat Chang Lom and Wat Nang Phaya, which exhibit the distinctive Sukhothai style.
Kamphaeng Phet, situated about 70 kilometers to the south, was another important town associated with Sukhothai. It served as a military stronghold and played a vital role in protecting the kingdom. The town boasts well-preserved city walls, moats, and temples, such as Wat Phra Kaeo and Wat Phra That.
The Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns not only provide a glimpse into the past but also serve as important cultural and religious centers. The annual Loy Krathong festival, celebrated in November, attracts thousands of visitors who come to witness the floating of beautifully decorated baskets on the Yom River.
In recognition of its outstanding universal value, the Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991. The site stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Thailand, offering a captivating experience for visitors from around the world.
