Bashan
Bashan is a biblical place first mentioned in Genesis 14:5, where it is said that Chedorlaomer and his confederates "smote the Rephaim in Ashteroth", where Og the king of Bashan had his residence. At the time of Israel's entrance into the Promised Land, Og came out against them, but was utterly routed. This country extended from Gilead in the south to Hermon in the north, and from the Jordan river on the west to Salcah on the east.
Berekhat Ram
Berekhat Ram;, (also spelled Berekhet Ram, Berechat Ram Braikhat Ram, Birkat Ram, the Ram Pool or Lake Ram) is a Palaeolithic site near Mas'adah, at the foot of Mount Hermon, in the Golan Heights. It is the findspot of the Venus of Berekhat Ram, a pebble allegedly worked by Homo erectus.
Venus of Berekhat Ram
The Venus of Berekhat Ram is a pebble found at Berekhat Ram on the Golan Heights in the summer of 1981 by archaeologist N. Goren-Inbar of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. An article by Goren-Inbar and S. Peltz (1995) claims it has been modified to represent a female human figure, identifying it as a possible artefact made by Homo erectus of the later Acheulean, in the early Middle Paleolithic.
Quneitra
Quneitra is the largely destroyed and abandoned capital of the Quneitra Governorate in south-western Syria. It is situated in a high valley in the Golan Heights at an elevation of 1,010 metres (3,313 feet) above sea level. Quneitra was founded in the Ottoman era as a way station on the caravan route to Damascus and subsequently became a garrison town of some 20,000 people, strategically located near the ceasefire line with Israel. Its name is Arabic for "the little bridge".
Lake Ram
Lake Ram is a crater lake in the northeastern Golan Heights, near Mount Hermon. The only sources of the lake are rain water and an underground spring. The water does not leave the lake to any other body of water. The crater is a maar. It is a Palaeolithic site of the findspot of the Venus of Berekhat Ram, a pebble allegedly worked by Homo erectus.
United Nations Disengagement Observer Force Zone
The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) was established by United Nations Security Council Resolution 350 on 31 May 1971, to implement Resolution 338 (1973) which called for an immediate ceasefire and implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 242. The resolution was passed on the same day the "Agreement on Disengagement" was signed between Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights, finally establishing a ceasefire to end the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
Shouting Hill
The Shouting Hill is a hill in the Israeli controlled portion of the Golan Heights. The hill is situated near the Druze village of Majdal Shams in the area of the Golan that is occupied by Israel. During the Six Day War, Israel captured the majority of the heights. The Shouting Hill is located just close to the ceasefire line that separates Syrian controlled territory and the territory occupied by Israel. The Druze community members of the Golan Heights were separated after the war.
Quneitra Crossing
The Quneitra Crossing is a ceasefire line crossing between Syrian controlled territory and the Israeli-occupied portion of the Golan Heights. Syrian Druze from the Golan Heights are permitted to cross through the passage to study, work and live in Syria. The crossing is also used for the export of apples grown by Israeli Druze farmers under the auspices of the Red Cross. The only concrete guard post along the border is at the Quneitra crossing.
Valley of Tears
The Valley of Tears is the name given to an area in the Golan Heights after it became the site of a major battle in the Yom Kippur War. On 6 October 1973 the Syrian 7th Infantry Division attacked the Israeli 7th Armored Brigade in the area between Mount Hermonit and a southern ridge known as "Booster" in Israel, or Tel el Mekhafi in Arabic. The Syrians started the offensive with an artillery barrage, but failed to move tanks across the anti-tank ditch.
Highway 98 (Israel)
Highway 98 is the primary north-south highway in the Golan Heights. It is shaped like an archer's bow, and it runs parallel to the ceasefire line of the occupied territory with the rest of Syria. The route runs from Tzemah junction south of the Kinneret, first through the Yarmuk valley, then it rises up a steep slope into the Golan Heights and crosses it until it reaches the lowest cable-car station on Mount Hermon. There it meets Route 999.
Petroleum Road
The Petroleum Road is a privately owned north-south asphalt road in the Golan Heights. It is 47 km long. It begins near Mount Paras on the east edge of the central Golan, and ends in the northern Golan near the Israeli controlled Golan-Lebanese frontier, nearby Ghajar. Most of the road is marked on maps as inaccessible to traffic because of poor road quality. The name Petroleum Road derives from the now defunct oil pipeline of the Trans-Arabian Pipeline Company, which the road runs adjacent to.
Mount Hermon ski resort
The Mount Hermon ski resort is situated on the south-eastern slopes of Mount Hermon, a few kilometers off the Israeli-Syrian ceasefire line, in the Israeli-occupied portion of the Golan Heights. The site is surrounded by the Hermon nature reserve. While the nature reserve is open year-round, the ski resort is open only at the peak of winter (usually January–March), when enough snow is accumulated on its ground.
Hermon nature reserve
Hermon nature reserve (שמורת חרמון) is a nature reserve located in the north of the Golan Heights, which was declared a nature reserve on December 6, 1974. The reserve includes an area in southern Mount Hermon which is located in the Israeli occupied portion of the Golan Heights. The reserve excludes the Mount Hermon ski resort, Neve Ativ and the Nimrod Fortress. The total area of the reserve is 18,842 acres (76,250 dunam).
