Agaunum
Roman Agaunum, the modern Saint-Maurice in the canton Valais in southwesternmost Switzerland, was a minor post confined between the Rhône and the mountains along the well-travelled road that led from Roman Genava, modern Geneva, over the Alps by the Great St. Bernard Pass to Italy. Agaunum is noted for the fact that the monks at the monastery of Agaunum performed perpetual prayers since its formation in 522 by King Sigismund.

St. Maurice's Abbey (French: Abbaye de Saint-Maurice d'Agaune or Saint-Maurice-en-Valais) is a historical building in Saint-Maurice, Canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is situated against a cliff in a section of the road between Geneva and the Simplon Pass. The abbey itself is a territorial abbacy and not part of a diocese. It is best known for its connection to the story of the martyrdom of the Theban Legion, its practice of perpetual psalmody, and a renowned collection of art and antiquity.

Lavey is a former municipality in the district of Aigle in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. It was first recorded in year 1016 as A Laver. In 1189 it was known as Laveto. The municipality contained the villages Lavey-Village and Lavey-les-Bains. It had 138 inhabitants in 1764, which increased to 185 in 1803 and 251 in 1850. In 1970 the municipality was merged with the neighboring municipality Morcles to form a new and larger municipality Lavey-Morcles.

Morcles is a village and former municipality in the district of Aigle in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. It was first recorded in year 1043 as Morcles. The municipality had 66 inhabitants in 1764, which increased to 84 in 1803 but went back down to 68 in 1850. In 1970 the municipality was merged with the neighboring municipality Lavey to form a new and larger municipality Lavey-Morcles.
Fortress Saint-Maurice
Fortress Saint-Maurice is one of the three fortification complexes comprising the Swiss National Redoubt. The westernmost of the three, Fortress Saint-Maurice complements Fortress Saint Gotthard and Fortress Sargans to secure the central alpine region of Switzerland against an invading force. The National Redoubt was first conceived in the 1880s as an easily defensible area to secure the survival of the Swiss Confederation.
Fort de Dailly
The Fort de Dailly is the largest component of Fortress Saint-Maurice, which is in turn one of the three principal fortified regions of the National Redoubt of Switzerland. Almost entirely subterranean, the Fort de Dailly was built in the Massif de Dailly to the east of Saint-Maurice beginning in 1892. With the Fort de Savatan, it comprises a fortress complex encased in rock high above the strategic Saint-Maurice valley, capable of commanding the valley from Chillon to Martigny.
