From 1974 to 1984 Vaxholm was united with Österåker Municipality, making up a municipality called Vaxholm, but with the seat in Åkersberga.
Värmdö Municipality
Värmdö Municipality (Värmdö kommun) is a municipality in Stockholm County in east central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Gustavsberg, with a population of 9,682 (2005), situated on the main island at an elevation of 37 m. The municipality is named after the main island Värmdön, 180 km in size. The municipality in its present form was created in 1974, when "old" Värmdö was amalgamated with Gustavsberg (which had been detached from it in 1902) and Djurö.
Österåker Municipality
Österåker Municipality is a municipality in Stockholm County in east central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Åkersberga, with a population of 26,727 (2005). From 1974 to 1982 Österåker was part of Vaxholm Municipality. Its location by the Stockholm archipelago, in the Roslagen area, attracts both people who settles here, often commuting to Stockholm, and visiting tourists.
Österskär
Österskär is eastern part of Åkersberga, Österåker Municipality in Sweden. It hosts the terminal station of the Stockholm suburban railway Roslagsbanan. The area is located in a hilly peninsula between Tunaviken and Sätterfjärden northwest of Trälhavet. Due to the height differences and the possibility to get a sea view speed up the building process. Many Stockholmers have their boats in one of Österskär's many marinas. In 1906, Roslagsbanan opened to Österskär for freight traffic.
Vaxholm Castle
Vaxholm Castle sits on an island just east of the Swedish village of Vaxholm. In 1970, it was used as a movie location for the pirate stronghold in 'Pippi Longstocking in Taka Tuka land'. A scenic view of the castle may be seen from the car ferry which plies the short distance between Vaxholm and Rindö.
Grinda
Grinda is an island located in the Stockholm archipelago, Sweden. It is located south of Ljusterö, east of Vaxholm and west of Svartsö and Möja. Grinda is a popular island especially during summer, for campers, tourists and people travelling the Stockholm archipelago by boat. Most of the island is owned by the non-profit organisation Skärgårdsstiftelsen (Archipelago Foundation), whose purpose is keeping the island's nature and facilities in good condition for outside visitors.

Battle of Stäket
The Battle of Stäket was a minor battle during the Great Northern War. A probing Russian force, circumventing Vaxholm Castle, attempted to pass through Baggensstäket, a very narrow passage in the Stockholm archipelago. After a desperate counterattack by Södermanlands regemente the Russian force departed.

Baggensstäket
Baggensstäket (also Baggarstäket or Södra stäket) is a strait in the Stockholm archipelago, between the island of Värmdö and the mainland. It is part of the waterway between the firth of Baggensfjärden and bay of Lännerstaviken. The waterway continues northwards through Skurusundet till Stockholm. The strait is shallow and narrow and can only be traversed by small vessels with up to 3 meter draft. Traffic through the strait is heavy in summertime.

Vira bruk
Vira bruk is a village and an historic iron works in Österåker in Sweden. Vira bruk was founded around 1630 by Clas Fleming. On the basis on a monopoly granted by a royal privilege it manufactured most of the rapiers and swords for the Swedish army into the mid 19th Century. Vira bruk was owned by the Fleming family until 1757, when it was sold to Reinhold Angerstein, who at that time was an official of the Swedish Board of Mines.

2013 Saltsjöbanan train crash
The 2013 Saltsjöbanan train crash occurred in early morning hours of 15 January 2013. A passenger train started to move without authorization, with reportedly only a cleaner on board. It overran a set of buffer stops and crashed into a block of flats in Saltsjöbaden, Sweden. The cleaner lady was first suspected of having stolen the train but was later cleared of blame, as the train was then considered to have started moving due to some malfunction in connection with safety violations.
