The Battle off the coast of Jaffna – a naval battle fought between the Navy of Sri Lanka and Tamil Tiger ships. According to Sri Lankan sources, it took place on Saturday 1 November 2008 in the northern territorial waters of Sri Lanka off the coast of Jaffna during the Sri Lankan Civil War. A Sri Lankan government customs officer, D.K.P. Dassangayake, reported that the battle begun as the Navy met the rebel ships and exchanged fire.

Jaffna Fort
Jaffna Fort is a fort built by the Portuguese at Jaffna, Sri Lanka in 1618 under Philip De Olivera following the Portuguese invasion of Jaffna. It was captured by the Dutch under Raiclop Van Goins in 1658 who expanded it. In 1795, it was taken over by the British, and remained under the control of a British garrison till 1948.

Owned by Sri Lanka Railways, the state-owned railway operator, the station was once one of the busiest in the country, linking the north with the capital Colombo. The popular Yarl Devi service, which operated on the Northern Line, called at the station. In the late 1980s the station suffered heavy damage due to the civil war.
