Summary

Built at the end of the 16th century on a plan in the form of a grill, the instrument of the martyrdom of St Lawrence, the Escurial Monastery stands in an exceptionally beautiful site in Castile. Its austere architecture, a break with previous styles, had a considerable influence on Spanish architecture for more than half a century. It was the retreat of a mystic king and became, in the last years of Philip II's reign, the centre of the greatest political power of the time.

This magnificent complex, also known as El Escorial, is a symbol of the Spanish Renaissance and a testament to the power and influence of the Habsburg dynasty.

History

The construction of the Monastery and Site of the Escurial began in 1563 under the orders of King Philip II of Spain. The king commissioned the project to commemorate the Spanish victory over the French at the Battle of Saint Quentin. The site was chosen due to its strategic location in the Sierra de Guadarrama, providing a stunning backdrop for the monastery.

The design of the complex was entrusted to the Spanish architect Juan Bautista de Toledo, who unfortunately passed away before its completion. His apprentice, Juan de Herrera, took over and completed the project in 1584. The architectural style of the Monastery and Site of the Escurial is a blend of Renaissance and Spanish Herrerian styles, characterized by its austere and symmetrical appearance.

The complex served as a royal residence, monastery, and burial site for the Spanish monarchs. It also housed a library, art gallery, and a school. The library, known as the Royal Library of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, is one of the most important libraries in Europe, housing a vast collection of manuscripts and rare books.

Current State

Today, the Monastery and Site of the Escurial stands as a remarkable example of Spanish architecture and a significant cultural landmark. The complex covers an area of over 33,000 square meters and consists of several interconnected buildings, including the Basilica, the Royal Palace, the Pantheon of the Kings, and the Library.

The Basilica, with its impressive dome and stunning altarpiece, is the centerpiece of the complex. It houses numerous chapels and is adorned with beautiful frescoes and sculptures. The Royal Palace, with its grand halls and lavish decorations, provides a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Spanish monarchy.

The Pantheon of the Kings is the final resting place for many Spanish monarchs, including King Philip II. The marble tombs and intricate decorations make it a solemn and awe-inspiring space. The Library, with its vast collection of over 40,000 books, including rare manuscripts and incunabula, is a treasure trove for scholars and researchers.
