Westerplatte
Westerplatte is a peninsula in Gdańsk, Poland, located on the Baltic Sea coast mouth of the Dead Vistula, in the Gdańsk harbour channel. From 1926 to 1939 it was the location of a Polish Military Transit Depot (WST), sanctioned within the territory of the Free City of Danzig (now Gdańsk). It is famous for the Battle of Westerplatte, which was the first clash between Polish and German forces during the Invasion of Poland and thus the first battle of the European theater of World War II.
Martwa Wisła
The Martwa Wisla is a river, one of the branches of the Vistula, flowing through the city of Gdańsk in northern Poland. It got its name when this branch of the river became increasingly moribund. A harbor canal was constructed with the Westerplatte on one of its banks. It was constructed to flow through Danzig into the Danziger Bucht, now Gdańsk Bay. Its river mouth and environs double as a harbor channel for the Inner Port of the port of Gdańsk.
Battle of Westerplatte
The Battle of Westerplatte began the Second World War in Europe. During the first week of September 1939, a Military Transit Depot (Wojskowa Składnica Tranzytowa, WST) on the peninsula of Westerplatte, Free City of Danzig, that was manned by fewer than 200 Polish soldiers, held out for seven days in the face of a heavy German attack.
Gdańsk Shipyard
Gdańsk Shipyard (Stocznia Gdańskа) is a large Polish shipyard, located in the city of Gdańsk. The yard gained international fame when Solidarity (Solidarność) was founded there in September 1980. It is situated on the left side of Martwa Wisła and on Ostrów Island.
Gdańsk Brzeźno railway station
Gdańsk Brzeźno is a former SKM stop in Gdańsk, Poland. It is no longer used since June 2005, after canceling passenger service on Gdańsk - Nowy Port line. This line is now used only for freight transport. There is plan to include the stop in the planned new Metropolitan Tricity Train line to be ready for 2012 UEFA European Football Championship.
Gdańsk Zaspa Towarowa railway station
Gdańsk Zaspa Towarowa is a former SKM stop in Gdańsk, Poland. It is no longer used after canceling passenger service on Gdańsk – Nowy Port line in June 2005. This line is now used only for freight transport. The stop is likely to have re-open by 2012 as it is near to the location of the future stadium PGE Arena, which is planned for 2012 UEFA European Football Championship.
Gdańsk Nowy Port railway station
Gdańsk Nowy Port is a former SKM stop in Gdańsk, Poland. It is no longer used since December 15, 2002, after shortening the line Gdańsk - Nowy Port line to Brzeźno. Despite plans of re-opening the line it is very unlikely that this stop would be restored, as the access to it has been impossible since November 2005.
PGE Arena Gdańsk
The PGE Arena Gdańsk, previously called the Baltic Arena, is a football stadium in Gdańsk, Poland. It is used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Lechia Gdańsk. The Stadium is located on ul. Pokoleń Lechii Gdańsk ("Generations of Lechia Gdańsk street") in the northern part of the city. The capacity of the stands is 43,615 spectators, all seated and roofed. PGE Arena Gdańsk is the largest arena in Ekstraklasa and the third largest in the country.
