Chimbote

Chimbote is the largest city in the Ancash Region of Peru, and the capital of both Santa Province and Chimbote District. The city is located on the coast in Chimbote Bay, 130 km south of Trujillo and 420 kilometers north of Lima on the North Pan-American highway. It is the start of a chain of important cities on the Peruvian north coast like Trujillo, Chiclayo and Piura. The advantages of this geographic location made Chimbote into a transshipment junction for the Santa River valley.

These valleys have extensive sown plains with cotton, rice, sugar and nutritional products. The city of Santa is the first colonial city of the Ancash coast. This rich valley is formed by the outlet of the Santa River. The Santa River is born in the Conococha lagoon in the Cordillera Blanca (White mountain range).

Isla Blanca (Blanca Island) is a volcanic island located at the mouth of Chimbote Bay, near Chimbote, Peru. Administratively it is in Chimbote District, Santa Province, Ancash Region. The island is approximately 3200 m long and 920 m wide. It rises to an altitude of 204 m. Its relief is very rough and rocky. The contours are very steep, especially on the west side of the island. The island is white in appearance due to the deposition of guano by seabirds.
