Battle of Gaza (312 BC)
The Battle of Gaza was a battle of the Third war of the Diadochi between Ptolemy and Demetrius. Ptolemy launched an invasion of Syria. With 18,000 infantry and 4,000 cavalry he arrived to Gaza in early 312 BC. Demetrius decided to offer him battle, but was routed; losing 500 men killed, a further 8,000 taken prisoner, and losing all his elephants. He retreated to Tripolis in Phoenicia.
Battle of Yaunis Khan
The Battle of Yaunis Khan was fought on October 28, 1516, between the Ottoman Empire and the Mamelukes. The Mamelukes cavalry forces led by Janbirdi al-Ghazali attacked the Ottomans that were trying to cross Gaza on the way to Egypt. The Ottomans were led by Grand Vizier Hadim Sinan Pasha and they were able to break the Egyptian Mameluke cavalry charge. Al-Ghazali was wounded during the confrontation and the left-over Mameluke forces and their commander Al-Ghazali retreated to Cairo.
Sayed al-Hashim Mosque
The Sayed al-Hashim Mosque is one of the largest and oldest mosques in Gaza, located in the ad-Darrāj Quarter of the Old City, off of al-Wehda Street. The tomb of Hashim ibn Abd al-Manaf, Muhammad's great grandfather who died in Gaza during a trading voyage, is located under the dome of the mosque according to Muslim tradition. A mosque and hostel have been located at the present site since at least the 12th century CE.
Palestine Stadium
Palestine Stadium is located in Gaza City on the Gaza Strip. It is the national stadium and the home of Palestine national football team. The stadium's capacity is around 10,000. It was bombed by Israel on April 1, 2006, directly on the centre spot, and is currently unusable due to the crater formed. FIFA has announced that it will fund the repair work. It was again bombed on November 19, 2012, by the Israeli Defence Force as part of Operation Pillar of Cloud.
Islamic University of Gaza
The Islamic University of Gaza, also known as IUG, IU Gaza, or The University of Gaza, is an independent Palestinian university established in 1978 in Gaza City, Palestinian territories. The university, according to its website, has 10 faculties capable of awarding either B.A. , B. Sc. , M.A. , M. Sc. , Diploma and higher diploma in their respective disciplines.
Battle of Gaza (2007)
The Battle of Gaza was a military conflict between Hamas and Fatah that took place between June 7 and 15, 2007 in the Gaza Strip. After winning Palestinian legislative elections in 2006, Hamas formed the Palestinan authority national unity government with Fatah in 2007, headed by Ismail Haniya. In June 2007 Hamas fighters took control of the Gaza Strip and removed Fatah officials.
Gaza Governorate
The Gaza Governorate is one of 16 Governorates of the Palestinian National Authority located in the north central Gaza Strip which is administered by the Palestinian National Authority aside from its border with Israel, airspace and maritime territory. According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the district's population was 505,700 in 2006. All of its seats were won by Hamas members in the 2006 parliamentary elections. It is governed by Mohammed Qadoura.
Siege of Gaza
During the Siege of Gaza, Alexander the Great, by utilizing the engines he had employed against Tyre, succeeded in reaching the walls. After three unsuccessful assaults, the stronghold was taken by storm. Batis expected to hold Egypt in subjection until the Great King could raise another army and confront Alexander in a battle from this city. It was on an eminence, on the edge of a desert from which the surrounding area could be easily controlled.
Great Mosque of Gaza
The Great Mosque of Gaza also known as the Great Omari Mosque is the largest and oldest mosque in the Gaza Strip, located in Gaza's old city. Believed to stand on the site of an ancient Philistine temple, the site was used by the Byzantines to erect a church in the 5th century, but after the Muslim conquest in the 7th century, it was transformed into a mosque. Described as "beautiful" by an Arab geographer in the 10th century, the Great Mosque's minaret was toppled in an earthquake in 1033.
Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights is an independent Palestinian human rights organization based in Gaza City, founded and directed by Raji Sourani. The non-governmental organization was established in 1995 by a group of Palestinian lawyers and human rights activists and receives funding from governmental, non-governmental, and religious sources.
Welayat Mosque
Welayat Mosque or Kateb al-Welaya Mosque is a small historic mosque located along Omar Mukhtar Street in Gaza City in the Zaytoun Quarter of the old city. The mosque was built by the Mamluks in 1432, however, the structure could date as far back as 1344. Additions to the wstern part of the mosque were commissioned in 1584 by Ahmed Bey, the Ottoman clerk of Wilayat Dimashq, hence the name Kateb al Welaya ("the clerk of the state").
Rimal
Rimal or Remal (meaning "sands" in Arabic) is a district in Gaza located 3 kilometers from the city center. Situated along the coastline, it has been considered the most prosperous neighborhood in Gaza. The main street that runs through Gaza, Omar Mukhtar Street runs northwest-southeast in the district and the main coastal road, Ahmad Orabi/Rasheed Street northeast-southwest. Rimal is divided into southern and northern halves.
Tel al-Hawa
Tel al-Hawa ("Hill of the Wind") or Tel al-Islam ("Hill of Islam") is a neighborhood in the southern part of the Palestinian city of Gaza. Founded by the Palestinian National Authority in the late 1990s, Tel al-Hawa is one of the more affluent areas of the city. It contains the Islamic University in Gaza and the Interior Ministry of the Palestinian National Authority.
Al-Shifa Hospital
Al-Shifa Hospital is the largest medical complex and central hospital of Gaza, located in the district of North Rimal. The current director of the hospital is Khaled Hassan.
Qasr al-Basha
Qasr al-Basha (also known as Radwan Castle and Napoleon's Fort) was formerly a large palace, and now a two-floored girl's school and museum, situated in the Old City of Gaza. It served as a seat of power in the Mamluk and Ottoman periods and as a police station under the British Mandate.
Church of Saint Porphyrius
The Church of Saint Porphyrius is the Orthodox Christian church of Gaza, and the oldest active church in the city. Located in the Zaytun Quarter of the Old City, it is named after the 5th century bishop of Gaza, Saint Porphyrius, whose tomb is situated in the northeastern corner of the church.
University College of Applied Sciences
University College of Applied Sciences (UCAS) is a technical college in Gaza founded in 1998. It offers 40 majors in engineering, health, technology, administration, education and the humanities. The school has a student population of 6,000. The main campus is in Gaza City. Females make up 50% of the student body. The College offers undergraduate degrees in a number of unique specializations such as education technology, technological management and planning, and geographic information systems.
Unknown Soldier's Square
Soldier's Square or Square of the Unknown Soldier is a city square in Gaza City, situated along Omar Mukhtar Street in the Rimal district. It is currently a large public garden popular with unemployed Gazans during the day and promenading families in the evenings.
Sheikh Radwan
Sheikh Radwan is a district of Gaza City located nearly 3 kilometers northwest of the city center. It borders al-Shati camp to the southwest, Rimal to the south, and Jabalia to the east. The Sheikh Radwan Cemetery is located in the district. It contains hundreds of graves for Palestinians killed in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including Hamas leaders Ahmed Yassin, Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi, and Said Siam.

Ibn Uthman Mosque
The Ibn Uthman Mosque is the second largest old mosque in Gaza City. It is also regarded as second to the Great Mosque of Gaza in terms of physical appearance and status as a Friday mosque. Noted for its architectural patterns, the mosque was established in three different stages during the Burji Mamluk period of rule in Gaza.
American International School in Gaza
American International School in Gaza is a school located in Gaza. The school opened in 1999. During Israel's bombing of Gaza, Operation Cast Lead, the school was destroyed by an aerial bomb. Islamic fundamentalists criticized the schools coeducational classes. Islamic fundamentalists had attacked the school on some occasions. 2009 the school held summer camp and planned to hold fall classes even though the campus had been bombed.
Gaza Mall
The Gaza Mall is a shopping mall that opened in Gaza in July 2010. The fully air-conditioned, modern, indoor shopping venue in the upscale Rimal neighborhood of Gaza extends over 19,000 sq. ft. on two floors, the second floor contains eights shops. It was built at a cost of $1.5 million.
