Wonsan

Wŏnsan is a port city and naval base that was opened by the occupying Japanese in 1880. It is located in the Kangwon Province (North Korea) of North Korea, on the westernmost part of the Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea) and the capital of that province. However, before the Korean War, it was located in a province called South Hamgyong, and during that war, it was the location of the Blockade of Wonsan. The population of the city is estimated to have been 331,000 in 2000.

Located at 39.1872, 127.408 (Lat. / Lng.), about 3 miles away.

Territorial Abbey of Tokwon

Tokwon Abbey was a Benedictine monastery of the Congregation of Missionary Benedictines of Saint Ottilien, located near the town of Wonsan in what is now North Korea. Originally founded as a monastic mission in Seoul, the community transferred to Tokwon in the 1920s to take charge of the newly-created Apostolic Vicariate of Wonsan. The persecution of Christians in North Korea since 1949 made any church activity in the abbacy impossible.

Located at 39.194, 127.374 (Lat. / Lng.), about 1 miles away.
