Lake Taupo
Lake Taupo is a lake situated in the North Island of New Zealand. With a surface area of 616 square kilometres, it is the largest lake by surface area in New Zealand, and the second largest freshwater lake by surface area in geopolitical Oceania after Lake Murray (Papua New Guinea). Lake Taupo has a perimeter of approximately 193 kilometres, a deepest point of 186 metres.
Huka Falls
The Huka Falls are a set of waterfalls on the Waikato River that drains Lake Taupo in New Zealand. A few hundred metres upstream from the Huka Falls, the Waikato River narrows from approximately 100 metres across into a narrow canyon only 15 metres across. The canyon is carved into lake floor sediments laid down before Taupo's Oruanui eruption 26,500 years ago. The volume of water flowing through often approaches 220,000 litres per second.
Craters of the Moon (geothermal site)
Craters of the Moon Thermal Area (or Karapiti in Māori language) is a region with geothermal activity north of Taupo, New Zealand. It is a part of Wairakei, the largest geothermal field in New Zealand, with a surface area of about 25 km2, which lies in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The name springs from the many hydrothermal eruption craters, which are in part barren and which have bright colours.
Wairakei
Wairakei is the name of a power station, small settlement and a geothermal area a few kilometres north of Taupo, in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand, on the Waikato River.
Taupo Airport
Taupo Airport is a small airport 8 km to the south of Taupo township on the eastern shores of Lake Taupo, New Zealand. Scheduled flights are operated by Eagle Airways, a division of Air New Zealand, using Raytheon Beechcraft 1900D aircraft. Due to its close proximity to world renowned trout fishing, golf, hunting, skiing and luxury resorts Taupo Airport is becoming an increasingly popular destination for private jets.
Taupo District
The Taupo District covers 6,350 km² of land, as well as a further 610 km² of lake area, both in Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake, and also in the smaller Lake Rotoaira. The district stretches from the small town of Mangakino in the northwest to the Tongariro National Park in the south, and east into the Kaingaroa Forest. The district's population is largely located in the two main centres, Taupo and Turangi.
Tauhara College
Tauhara College is a medium-sized, decile five school in Taupo, New Zealand. The co-educational high-school currently has about 600 students. Tauhara College is one of three high-schools in Taupo; the others being Taupo-nui-a-Tia College and Lake Taupo Christian School (private). As well as normal school curriculum, Tauhara runs various night-classes for the public, and has a long successful record of hosting international students from all over the world.
Taupo Motorsport Park
Taupo Motorsport Park (also known as the Taupo Race Track) is a motorsports circuit located in Broadlands Road, Taupo, New Zealand. It is owned and operated by MIT Development Ltd. It is considered to be the best facility of its type in Australasia. The circuit was an upgrade from a 1.4 km Taupo Car Club's circuit to the new 3.5 km international layout in 2006. The Motorsort Park completed in 2006 at the cost of NZ$13 million.
Oruanui eruption
The Oruanui eruption of New Zealand's Taupo Volcano was the world's largest known eruption in the past 70,000 years, with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 8. It occurred around 26,500 years ago in the Late Pleistocene and generated approximately 430 km of pyroclastic fall deposits, 320 km of pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits and 420 km of primary intracaldera material, equivalent to 530 km of magma.
Hatepe eruption
The Hatepe eruption, named for the Hatepe Plinian pumice tephra layer, sometimes referred to as the Taupo eruption and is dated to around the year 180 AD, was Lake Taupo's most recent major eruption. It is considered New Zealand's largest eruption during the last 20,000 years. The eruption ejected some 120 km, a VEI 7 eruption, of which 30 km was ejected in the space of a few minutes.
Wharewaka
Wharewaka is a suburb of Taupo, New Zealand. It stretches from Rainbow Point to Five Mile Bay on the west side of State Highway 1. Wharewaka lies on a small point of land next to Lake Taupo and 1.6 km northwest of the Taupo Airport. It has a population of 462. Wharewaka has a large proportion of holiday homes. Recent developments such as the Wharewaka Point Development and the Lakeside development have seen a rise in population. Wharewaka Point is a busy swimming beach during the summer.
Acacia Bay
Acacia Bay is a community on a small inlet on the western shores of Tapuaeharuru Bay, Lake Taupo in New Zealand. There are four main beach areas. It is located approximately 2 miles west of Taupo. Acacia Bay is the location of the Tauhara Trust, a retreat centre and pioneering centre in the revival of organic and biodynamic horticulture, which was moved to the site in 1971. The trust has esoteric roots, having been founded in 1939 by the widow of Dr.
Taupo Intermediate School
Taupo Intermediate School is a medium sized school (year 7 and year 8) located in Taupo, New Zealand. It is the only intermediate school located in Taupo. As of 2010 it has approximately 514 students with 51% of Students being Girls and 49% Being Boys,and is located at Kotare Street, Hilltop, Waikato 3330, New Zealand. Taupo Intermediate School is also part of the Bay of Plenty sports, and is especially successful in triathlons.
Taupo-nui-a-Tia College
Taupo-nui-a-Tia College is a co-educational high school in Taupo, New Zealand. The school currently has about 1050 students. Taupo-nui-a-Tia College is a Cornerstone Values school.
Owen Delany Park
Owen Delany Park is a multi-purpose sports stadium located in Taupo, New Zealand. The main sports are Rugby and Cricket though, several other sports are accommodated on a permanent basis with numerous other events on an oneoff basis.
Ben Lomond (Waikato)
Ben Lomond is a rhyolite lava dome near Lake Taupo in New Zealand's North Island. Located about eight kilometres north-northeast of Kinloch, it rises to a height of 744 metres above sea level. Ben Lomond erupted about 100,000 years ago, producing two lava lobes that flowed around 3.5 kilometres south and southwest from a vent about one kilometre south of Poihipi Road. Much of the lava formed grey banded obsidian as it cooled. Crystalline rhyolite and pumice were also produced.
Hinemaiaia Stream
The Hinemaiaia Stream is a river of the central North Island of New Zealand. It flows northwest from Kaimanawa Forest Park, flowing into the eastern shore of Lake Taupo at Hatepe, half way between Taupo and Turangi.
Wairakei River
The Wairakei River' or Wairakei Stream is a river of the Waikato Region of New Zealand's North Island. It flows southeast to meet the Waikato River, which it does at the town of Wairakei, 10 kilometres north of Taupo.
Taupo Volcano
Lake Taupo, in the centre of New Zealand’s North Island, is the caldera of a large rhyolitic volcano. This huge volcano has produced two of the world’s most violent eruptions in geologically recent times. The Taupo Volcano forms part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, a region of volcanic activity that extends from Ruapehu in the South, through the Taupo and Rotorua regions, to White Island, in the Bay of Plenty.
