Picton, New Zealand
Picton is a town in the Marlborough region of New Zealand. It is close to the head of Queen Charlotte Sound near the north-east corner of the South Island. The population was 2928 in the 2006 Census, a decrease of 72 from 2001. The town is named after Sir Thomas Picton, the Welsh military associate of the Duke of Wellington, who was killed at the Battle of Waterloo. Inter-island ferries to and from Wellington arrive and depart here by way of the Marlborough Sounds.
Queen Charlotte Sound (New Zealand)
Queen Charlotte Sound is the easternmost of the main sounds of the Marlborough Sounds, in New Zealand's South Island. It is, like the other sounds, a drowned river valley, and like the majority of its neighbours it runs southwest to northeast before joining Cook Strait. The town of Picton, the northern terminus of the South Island's railway and State Highway networks, lies near the head of the Sound. Other settlements by the sound are small and isolated - often simply individual properties.
Edwin Fox (ship)
Edwin Fox is unique as the only surviving ship that transported convicts to Australia, brought settlers to both Australia and New Zealand and served in the Crimean War. She is the oldest surviving merchant sailing ship. The ship is drydocked at The Edwin Fox Maritime Centre at Picton in New Zealand.
