Dedemsvaart
Dedemsvaart ("Dedem's Canal") is a village in Overijssel, the Netherlands, with a population of about 12,000. The town is located along an old canal, also called Dedemsvaart, which is the source of the village's name. The canal lost its commercial importance after World War II. The area around Dedemsvaart, until 2001 part of the municipality of Avereest, was an important center for industry.
Hollandscheveld
Hollandscheveld is a village in the municipality of Hoogeveen, the Netherlands. It was founded in the 17th century after the Hollandsche Compagnie (Company from Holland) bought the land to harvest its peat. It was initially named Hollandsche Veld (Field of the Hollandsche Compagnie) which was later combined into just Hollandscheveld. In 2004 3287 inhabitants lived in the town and 969 lived in the rural area around it.

Nieuw-Balinge is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 10 km northeast of Hoogeveen. In 2001, the village of Nieuw-Balinge had 446 inhabitants. The built-up area of the village was 0.16 km², and contained 171 residences. The statistical area "Nieuw-Balinge", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 930.

1975 Dutch train hostage crisis
On December 2, 1975, seven South Moluccan terrorists seized a train with about 50 passengers on board in open countryside near the village of Wijster, halfway between Hoogeveen and Beilen in the northern part of the Netherlands. The hijacking lasted for 12 days and three hostages were killed. The attackers came from a village where a few years later a primary school was seized. The attackers hid their weapons disguised as presents for the Sinterklaas holiday on December 5.

Pesse
Pesse is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is located in the municipality of Hoogeveen. The village is mainly known for the Pesse canoe, believed to be the world's oldest known boat. Carbon dating indicates that the boat was constructed during the early mesolithic period between 8040 BCE and 7510 BCE. It is currently housed in the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands. The canoe was found during the construction of the nearby A28.
