Heerlen
Heerlen is a city and a municipality in the southeastern Netherlands. The municipality is the second largest in the province of Limburg. It forms part of Parkstad Limburg, (formerly known as "Oostelijke Mijnstreek"), an agglomeration of about 220,000 inhabitants. After its early Roman beginnings and a rather modest medieval period, Heerlen became a centre for the coal mining industry in the Netherlands in the late 19th century.

Glaspaleis
The Glaspaleis is a modernist building in Heerlen, Netherlands, built in 1935. Formerly a fashion house and department store, Schunck, it is now the cultural centre of the city. The original name is Modehuis Schunck (Schunck Fashion House), but it was soon nicknamed Glaspaleis, which is now the official name. The architectural style is largely according to what is in the Netherlands known as het Nieuwe Bouwen, which corresponds roughly to Modernism, Bauhaus and International style.

Zuyd University of Applied Sciences is a University of Applied Sciences with campuses in Heerlen, Sittard and Maastricht in the southeastern Netherlands. The main focus of Zuyd University is on Bachelor programmes, 52 in total, most of them in Dutch. There are currently 8 master programmes. In the latest edition of the Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs 2008 ('2008 Higher Education Guide’), Zuyd University takes first place of the 13 larger universities of applied sciences, with an average score of 6.85.
Welten
Welten is a village in Heerlen, still retaining its village like appearance. A couple of landmarks remain in Welten, including a church dating back to the 11th century though restored in the 19th century, and the Weltermolen (Weltermill), a watermill powered by the Geleenbeek. The Weltermolen dates back to at least the 14th century.
Jan Stuyt
Jan Stuyt (21 August 1868, Purmerend - 11 July 1934, The Hague) was a Dutch architect. Stuyt started his architectural career in 1883 at the office of A.C. Bleys (1842-1912), whose neo-Romanesque style would become of great influence on Stuyt. In 1891 Stuyt joined the Cuypers office in Amsterdam, where he became an overseer of the building of the Cathedral of Saint Bavo in Haarlem between 1895 and 1898.
Weltermolen, Welten
The Weltermolen (literally Weltermill) is a watermill located in Welten, Heerlen in the Netherlands. It is fed by the Geleenbeek, with some extra force created by a largely man-made pond. The Weltermolen wasn't a watermill until the start of the 20th century. During WWII (approximately 1943) the waterwheel was taken out of action and an electrical motor took over. The mill was already mentioned in the 14th century and it has a strong connection with Huis Strijthagen.
Former V&D Heerlen
The former V&D in Heerlen was designed by Frits Peutz (best known for the Glaspaleis) in 1958 as part of the store chain Vroom & Dreesmann (located in Heerlen since 1920). The interior design was done by Mr. Kober and his daughter Marcia and the builders were E. Joosten and L. Reumkens. The director in Heerlen was Adrianus Merkx. The building was relatively different for Heerlen, although used to modern architecture, this building was described as skyscraper like (10 storeys high).
Royal Theater Heerlen
Situated close to the Heerlen train station, this egg shaped building dates back to 1938 and is one of the oldest still used cinemas of the Netherlands. It was designed by Frits Peutz (best known for the Glaspaleis) and J. Bongaerts. The buildings behind it are from a later date and include another building by Peutz. It originally had 1180 seats (some sources say 814, but 1180 is more likely); this amount was later reduced by almost half for more leg room, leaving 743 seats).
Ambachtsschool, Heerlen
The Ambachtsschool in Heerlen is a brick building with distinctive layers of marl (a stone commonly found in the south of Limburg). It is notable as one of the earliest vocational schools in the Netherlands. The building is located on the Burgemeester de Hesselleplein (formerly known as the Lindeplein), in Heerlen.
CELSTEC
The Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies (CELSTEC) is a Dutch research centre in the fields of Learning sciences and Technology Enhanced Learning, and part of the Open University of the Netherlands. CELSTEC is mainly targeted at carrying out research and development (R&D) projects. But furthermore, the centre also tests, implements and provides sustainable solutions to various partners within and without the OUNL. These solutions build on R&D and are evidence-based.
Sintermeertencollege
Sintermeertencollege is a comprehensive school in Heerlen, the Netherlands, established in 1967. The school was founded by the Bernardinuscollege as a dependence school for the Bernardinuscollege in Heerlen-west Netherlands. The school expanded in the 1980s with the Clara Mavo (vocational education) and merged with Coriovallum College in 1990. In 1993 Sintermeertencollege moved to a new premises at Valkenburgerweg 219 in Heerlen, a modern 3 storey building.
