The Hypogeum was discovered by accident in 1902 when construction workers were digging a well. It is believed to have been in use from around 4000 to 2500 BCE, during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods.

The purpose of the Hypogeum remains a subject of speculation, but it is widely believed to have served as a burial site and a place of ritual and worship. The intricate carvings, paintings, and artifacts found within the chambers suggest a deep reverence for the dead and a complex belief system centered around the afterlife.

Architecture and Features

The Hypogeum is a marvel of ancient engineering, with its chambers and passages meticulously carved out of the limestone bedrock. The complex consists of three levels: the upper level, the middle level, and the lower level. The upper level contains a series of small chambers, while the middle level houses the famous "Oracle Room," known for its unique acoustic properties. The lower level is the largest and most impressive, featuring a central chamber known as the "Holy of Holies."

The walls of the Hypogeum are adorned with intricate carvings and paintings, depicting various animals, spirals, and human figures. These artistic representations provide valuable insights into the beliefs and daily life of the prehistoric inhabitants of Malta.
