Gemas
Gemas (金马士) is a small town in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, just near the Negeri Sembilan-Johor state border. The town is located approximately 165 km from the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. It is the meeting place of the Malaysian west and east coast rail lines operated by Malayan Railways. For this reason, Gemas is comparatively busy for a town of its size. Gemas railway station was erected in 1922 and is still in operation today.
Gemas Baharu
Gemas Baharu is a small town in the district of Segamat, Johor, Malaysia. The town was located near Johor-Negeri Sembilan border, just 1 km near the original town centre of Gemas itself which was located at Negeri Sembilan side, therefore Gemas Baharu was considered as the Johorean part of Gemas. The historic bridge which was once destroyed to stop the Japanese army invasion during the World War II was located there.
Battle of Gemas
The Battle of Gemas—part of the wider Battle of Muar—took place during the Japanese invasion of Malaya in the Pacific Campaign of the Second World War. The action occurred on 14 January 1942 at the Gemencheh Bridge near Gemas and saw around 1,000 troops of the Japanese Japanese 5th Division killed or wounded during a fierce ambush initiated by Australian soldiers from 2/30th Battalion, assigned to the 27th Brigade of the 8th Division.
