Geography of Kiribati
This article describes the geography of the Republic of Kiribati. Kiribati consists of 32 atolls and one island scattered over all four hemispheres in an expanse of ocean equivalent in size to the continental United States. The islands lie roughly halfway between Hawaiʻi and Australia in the Micronesian region of the South Pacific. The three main island groupings are the Gilbert Islands, Phoenix Islands, and Line Islands.
Battle of Tarawa
The Battle of Tarawa (US code name Operation Galvanic) was a battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II, largely fought from November 20 to November 23, 1943. It was the first American offensive in the critical central Pacific region. It was also the first time in the war that the United States faced serious Japanese opposition to an amphibious landing. Previous landings met little or no initial resistance.
Tarawa
Tarawa is an atoll in the Republic of Kiribati, in the central Pacific Ocean. North Tarawa has much in common with other, more remote islands of the Gilberts group, while South Tarawa is the capital of Kiribati and home to over 50,000 people - half of the country's total population. The island is best known by outsiders as the site of the Battle of Tarawa during World War II.
South Tarawa
South Tarawa (in Gilbertese Tarawa Teinainano) is the capital and hub of the Republic of Kiribati and home to approximately half of Kiribati's total population. As at the 2010 Census its population was of 50,182 (including Betio). The South Tarawa population center consists of all the small islets from Betio in the West to Bonriki in the East, connected by the South Tarawa main road.
Betio
Betio is an island and a town at the extreme southwest of South Tarawa in Kiribati. The main port of Tarawa Atoll is located there.
Bonriki International Airport
Bonriki International Airport is an international airport in Kiribati, serving as the main gateway to the country. It is located in its capital, South Tarawa, which a group of islets in the atoll of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. Fiji's national carrier, Air Pacific, and Kiribati's state-owned airline, Air Kiribati, both connect Kiribati with Nadi, which is Air Pacific's hub and Fiji's main international gateway.
House of Assembly (Kiribati)
The House of Assembly of Kiribati has 46 members, 44 elected for a four year term in single-seat and multi-seat constituencies, 1 delegate from Banaba Island and 1 ex-officio member (the Attorney General). Created by the Constitution of 12 July 1979, its seat has been at Ambo on South Tarawa since October 2000. From 1979 to 2000, it was at Bairiki. The current Kiribati Electoral Commissioner is Rine Ueara.
Bikeman Island
Bikeman Island is a submerged islet about a half-hour's canoe ride Northeast of Betio, Kiribati. Due to changing currents and the construction of a causeway between Betio and Bairiki, Bikeman has been submerged since the early 1990s. Hawkins Field is a former World War II airfield on Betio, Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands of the Central Pacific. The airfield was named in honor of USMC 1st Lt. William Dean Hawkins who was killed in the battle to recapture Tarawa, and earned the Medal of Honor.
