Matsushima
is a group of islands in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. There are some 260 tiny islands (shima) covered in pines (matsu) – hence the name – and is ranked as one of the Three Views of Japan. A well-known apocryphal haiku often attributed to Matsuo Bashō indicates that the poet is at a loss for words: Matsushima ah!A-ah, Matsushima, ah!Matsushima, ah! Nearby cultural properties include Zuigan-ji, Entsū-in, Kanrantei, and the Satohama shell mound.
Miyagi District, Miyagi
Miyagi District, Miyagi is a district located in past Mutsu Province and today's Miyagi, Japan. The name of the prefecture was from this district. The original territory was east-west long from the Ōu Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, including current Sendai, Shiogama and Tagajō cities. As of 2003, the district has an estimated population of 69,567 and a density of 620.80 persons per km². The total area is 112.06 km².
Three Views of Japan
The Three Views of Japan is the canonical list of Japan's three most celebrated scenic sights, attributed to 1643 and scholar Hayashi Gahō. The views are of the eponymous pine-clad islands of Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture; the pine-clad sandbar of Amanohashidate in Kyoto Prefecture; and Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima Prefecture. All three are designated Special Places of Scenic Beauty, while Itsukushima is also a Special Historic Site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

His mausoleum of 1647 is decorated with motifs inspired by contact with the West and has been designated an Important Cultural Property. There is also a garden attributed to Kobori Enshū.
