Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, nicknamed "le Félicia", is a multi-purpose stadium, which can host football, rugby and athletics, in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. It is the national stadium of the Côte d'Ivoire national football team. It is named after the first president of the country, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, and is located in the commune of Le Plateau. St Paul's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the city of Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. The cathedral, which was designed by architect Aldo Spirito, serves as the motherchurch for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Abidjan. The first stone of the cathedral was consecrated on May 11, 1980 by Pope John Paul II during his first pastoral visit to Côte d'Ivoire . He also dedicated the building completion on August 10, 1985 during a second visit to the country.
2013 Houphouët-Boigny stampede
The 2013 Houphouët-Boigny stampede occurred as crowds departed a New Year's Eve fireworks display in the early hours of 1 January 2013 near the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Over 200 people were injured and 61 killed, mostly women and children. This was the second time in four years that a fatal stampede occurred at the stadium. President Alassane Ouattara declared three days of mourning and promised an investigation.
