Gran Sasso raid
The Gran Sasso raid refers to Operation Eiche, the rescue of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini by German paratroopers led by Major Otto-Harald Mors and Waffen-SS commandos in September 1943, during World War II. The airborne operation was personally ordered by Adolf Hitler, planned by Major Harald Mors and approved by General Kurt Student.
XENON Dark Matter Search Experiment
The XENON Dark Matter Search Experiment aims to construct a next-generation dark matter detector, which will use liquid xenon as the target material for finding Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The collaboration is led by Elena Aprile, an astrophysics professor at Columbia University. A 15 kg liquid xenon detector was installed at Gran Sasso underground laboratory in Italy during March 2006, and searched for WIMP interactions until October 2007.
Traforo del Gran Sasso
The Gran Sasso Tunnel is part of the A24 Motorway that links Rome and the Adriatic Sea via L'Aquila and Teramo, through the Apennine Mountains via the Gran Sasso in Abruzzo. There are two tunnels, each with two lanes for each direction, 10,176 metres long, that also host the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. Construction started on November 14, 1968. The eastbound tunnel (to Teramo) opened the December 1, 1984; while the westbound tunnel (to L'Aquila) opened in 1995.
GALLEX
GALLEX or Gallium Experiment was a radiochemical neutrino detection experiment that ran between 1991 and 1997 at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). This project was performed by an international collaboration of French, German, Italian, Israeli, Polish and American scientists led by the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik Heidelberg. It was designed to detect solar neutrinos and prove theories related to the Sun's energy creation mechanism.
