Valley of Elah
The Valley of Elah, "the valley of the oak or terebinth", best known as the place described in the Bible where the Israelites were encamped when David fought Goliath. It was near Azekah and Socho . On the west side of the valley, near Socho, there is a very large and ancient tree of this kind, 55 feet in height, its trunk 17 feet in circumference, and the breadth of its shade no less than 75 feet.
Battle of Ajnadayn
The Battle of Ajnadayn, fought on July 30, 634, south of Beit Shemesh in present day Israel, was the first major pitched battle between the Eastern Roman Empire (or Byzantine) and the army of the Arabic Rashidun Caliphate. The result of the battle was a decisive Muslim victory. The details of this battle are mostly known through Muslim sources, such as Al-Waqidi.
Britannia Park
Britannia Park is a forest and recreation area in Israel, in the Judean lowland. The forest was planted by the Jewish National Fund starting in the 1950s, and with the financial aid of British Jews, after whom the park was named.
Khirbet Qeiyafa
Khirbet Qeiyafa (Elah Fortress) is the site of an ancient city overlooking the Elah Valley. The ruins of the fortress were uncovered in 2007, near the Israeli city of Beit Shemesh, 20 miles from Jerusalem. It covers nearly 6 acres and is encircled by a 700 metres long city wall constructed of stones weighing up to eight tons each. Archaeologists suggest that it may have been the biblical city of Sha'arayim or Neta'im.
Highway 38 (Israel)
Highway 38 is an arterial road in the low plains of Judea in Israel. It serves as a main entrance to Beit Shemesh, and as a main north-south route in the region. Along the route are many nature preserves and archeological sites.
Adullam Grove Nature Reserve
The Adullam Grove Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in central Israel, south of Beit Shemesh. The Adullam Grove nature reserve was first declared in 1994, covering 5,380 dunams and was expanded with a further 1,152 dunams in 2004. The reserve was declared in order to protect Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub that grow naturally in the area.
