Leviathan of Parsonstown is the unofficial name of the Rosse six foot telescope. This is a historic reflecting telescope of 72 in (1.8 m) aperture, which was the largest telescope in the world from 1845 until the construction of the 100 in (2.5 m) Hooker Telescope in 1917. Birr Airfield is an airport located 1 NM south of the town of Birr in County Offaly in the Republic of Ireland. It was originally called Birr View Air Strip. The area has always been closely linked with aviation for many years, going back to the British Army Strip which was quite near the present field. The Ormand Flying Club has been in operation at Birr Airfield for over 30 years. The club is a Registered Training Facility for the new JAR PPL Licence.
