Durrus cheese
Durrus is a washed rind cow's milk cheese from Ireland. It was developed by Jeffa Gill in 1979, and is made by traditional methods. Durrus is produced in the valley of Coomkeen, near the village of Durrus on the Sheep's Head Peninsula in County Cork Ireland, where local herds provide the raw milk needed to make it. Durrus is a round, semi-soft cheese. It has a pale interior with a pinkish, yellow-grey rind. It is aged for 3 to 5 weeks to allow the flavour to mature.
Whiddy Island Disaster
The Whiddy Island disaster, also known as the Betelgeuse incident, occurred on 8 January 1979, at around 1:00 a.m. , when the oil tanker Betelgeuse exploded in West Cork, Ireland, at the offshore jetty of the Whiddy Island Oil Terminal, due to the failure of the ship's structure during an operation to discharge its cargo of oil. The tanker was owned by Total S.A. , and the oil terminal was owned and operated by Gulf Oil.

Muintir Bháire GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Durrus, County Cork, Ireland. The club fields teams in Gaelic football only. The club take part in competitions organized by Carbery division of Cork. Since the population of the area is small, the club is weak and mainly operates in the lowest grade available.
