Baghdad

Kingdom of Iraq (Mandate administration)

The Kingdom of Iraq under British Administration or Mandatory Iraq was created under the League of Nations Class A mandate under Article 22 and entrusted to Britain, when the Ottoman Empire was divided in August 1920 by the Treaty of Sèvres, following World War I. Garden of Ridván, Baghdad

The Garden of Ridván (lit. garden of paradise) or Najibiyyih Garden was a wooded garden in what is now Baghdad's Rusafa District, on the banks of the Tigris river. It is notable as the location where Bahá'u'lláh, founder of the Bahá'í Faith, stayed for twelve days from April 21 to May 2, 1863, after the Ottoman Empire exiled him from Baghdad and before commencing his journey to Constantinople.

Haifa Street

Haifa Street (or Hayfa Street) is a two mile long street in Baghdad, Iraq. Along with Yafa Street (named after the port city of Jaffa), it runs southeast to the Assassin's Gate, an archway that served as the main entrance to the American-run Green Zone during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, paralleling the Tigris river. It was named "Haifa" in the 1980s by Saddam Hussein in honor of the port city of Haifa. The street is lined with many high-rise buildings.

The number of neighborhood representatives on the district council is based upon the community's population.

Mustansiriya Madrasah

Al Rasheed Street

Al Rasheed Street or Al Rashid Street is located in Downtown Baghdad and is one of the city's main streets, stretching from North Gate to South Gate. The origin of Al Rasheed Street goes back to the Ottomans who ruled Iraq from 1534 to 1918. During that time, the only known public street in Baghdad was Al Naher Street (Shari al-Naher). Al Naher means River - the street stretches a few kilometers along the east banks of the river Tigris, so this may be the reasoning behind its name.

The Khan Murjan‎ is a building in the souq of Baghdad, Iraq. The structure was first built in the 14th century as a caravanserai, an inn for traveling merchants, whose center was a hall more than 13 metres high. The crenellated arches of brick and perforated windows make this a fascinating piece of architecture. The building was reputedly in a state of disrepair for over two centuries, with waist-high flood water from the Tigris standing in the famous hallway.

The Emo killings in Iraq were a string of homicides that were part of a campaign against gay Iraqi teenage boys who dressed in a Westernized "emo" style. At least six, and up to 70 young men were kidnapped, tortured and murdered in Baghdad, Iraq, during March 2012. In September 2012, BBC News reported that gay men in Baghdad say the killings are continuing.
