Gewandhaus

Gewandhaus is a concert hall in Leipzig, Germany, the home of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Today's hall is the third to bear this name; like the second, it is noted for its fine acoustics. The first Gewandhaus was built in 1781 by architect Johann Carl Friedrich Dauthe. The second opened on 11 December 1884, and was destroyed in the fire-bombings of World War II between 1943 and 1944.

Leipzig Central Station

Leipzig Central Station (Leipzig Hauptbahnhof) is, at 83,460 m², the world's largest railway station when measured by floor area. The Paulinerkirche was a church on the Augustusplatz in Leipzig, named after the "Pauliner", its original Dominican friars. Leipzig City Tunnel

The City Tunnel is a railway tunnel under construction for the city-centre S-Bahn in Leipzig with two tunnels with one track in each direction. It will link the Central Station with the two km distant Bayerischer Bahnhof (which is closed for the construction period). Construction began in July 2003. In March 2008, the first tube was structurally completed, the second in October 2008. The tunnel for the trains should be ready for the timetable change in December 2013.

History[edit] Leipzig has historically been a centre for Jews. Already in the 1250s there is mention of Jewish life in Leipzig. Its central location attracted Jewish traders from all over Europe to the Trade Fair. However, the Jewish community as an officially state-recognised organisation was established only in 1847 and only by then Jews were allowed to settle in Leipzig without any restrictions.
