Zwinger
The Zwinger (Der Dresdner Zwinger) is a palace in Dresden, eastern Germany, built in Rococo style and designed by court architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann. It served as the orangery, exhibition gallery and festival arena of the Dresden Court. The location was formerly part of the Dresden fortress of which the outer wall is conserved.
Battle of Dresden
The Battle of Dresden was fought on 26–27 August 1813 around Dresden, Germany, resulting in a French victory under Napoleon against forces of the Sixth Coalition of Austrians, Russians and Prussians under Field Marshal Schwartzenberg. However, Napoleon's victory was not as complete as it could have been. Substantial pursuit was not undertaken after the battle, and the flanking corps was surrounded and forced to surrender a few days later at the Battle of Kulm.
Kingdom of Saxony
The Kingdom of Saxony, lasting between 1806 and 1918, was an independent member of a number of historical confederacies in Napoleonic through post-Napoleonic Germany. From 1871 it was part of the German Empire. It became a Free state in the era of Weimar Republic in 1918 after the end of World War I and the abdication of King Frederick Augustus III of Saxony. Its capital was the city of Dresden, and its modern successor state is the Free State of Saxony.
Dresden University of Technology
The Technische Universität Dresden (usually translated from German as Dresden University of Technology and abbreviated TU Dresden or TUD) is the largest institute of higher education in the city of Dresden, the largest university in Saxony and one of the 10 largest universities in Germany with 36,066 students as of 2010. The name Technische Universität Dresden has only been used since 1961; the history of the university, however, goes back nearly 200 years to 1828.
Saxon State Library
The Saxon State Library (full name in German: Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden), abbreviated SLUB Dresden, is located in Dresden, Germany. It is both the regional library for the German State of Saxony as well as the academic library for the Dresden University of Technology (German: Technische Universität Dresden). It was created in 1996 through the merger of the Saxon State Library (SLB) and the State and University Library Dresden (SUBD).
Dresden Central Station
Dresden Central Station is one of two main inter-city transit hubs in the German city of Dresden. Designed by Ernst Giese and Paul Weidner, it was built between 1892 and 1897 at the southern border of the inner city and was important in the growth and development of the city.
Yenidze
Yenidze is the name of a former cigarette factory building in Dresden, Germany. It was built between 1907 and 1909 and is used today as an office building. It is notable for its Orientalizing exterior design which borrows design elements from mosques. "Yenidze" was the name of a tobacco company started by the entrepreneur Hugo Zietz, which imported tobacco from Ottoman Yenidze, Thrace. The "Oriental" style of architecture publicized the origin of the tobacco.
Ostragehege
Ostragehege is a multi-use sports venue in Dresden, Germany. Key buildings of the venue include the Heinz-Steyer-Stadion and the ice hockey stadium of the Dresdner Eislöwen (or Dresden ice lions). The stadium was the primary aiming point for No. 5 Group RAF squadron during the Dresden bombings of February 1945. Bomb runs were timed and direction calculated to fan out from this point, causing massive devastation and a fire-storm which killed tens of thousands.
Weißeritz
The Weißeritz is a river in Saxony. The 12 km short left tributary of the Elbe runs through Freital and Dresden. Its name is derived from west Slavic bystrica (wild water). The official name of the river used in documents and hydrographic maps is Vereinigte Weißeritz (United Weißeritz). The highest points of the Weißeritz watershed are at about 800 metres elevation. The river is formed by the confluence of the Wild Weißeritz and Red Weißeritz in Freital.
Sophienkirche
The Sophienkirche (Saint Sophia's Church), Dresden stood on the northeast corner of the Postplatz, (post office square) in Dresden's old town, before its destruction in 1962 on resolution of the party and government of the GDR. It was the only Gothic Church in the city.
Friedrichstadt (Dresden)
Friedrichstadt is a neighborhood in central Dresden, Germany. A factory district in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is known as the home of the founders of the artistic association known as Die Brücke.

The Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon in Dresden, Germany, is a museum of historic clocks and scientific instruments. Its holdings include terrestrial and celestial globes, astronomical, optical and geodetic devices dating back to the 16th century, as well as historic instruments for calculating and drawing length, mass, temperature and air pressure. The Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon is part of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (State Art Collections). It is located in the Zwinger.

Leibniz-Institut für Festkörper- und Werkstoffforschung
The Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research in Dresden – in short IFW Dresden – is a non-university research institute and a member of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Community. It is concerned with modern materials science and combines explorative research in physics, chemistry and materials science with technological development of new materials and products.

The Dresden Porcelain Collection is part of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen (State Art Collections) of Dresden, Germany. It is located in the Zwinger Palace.
Busmannkapelle Memorial
The Busmannkapelle Memorial (Gedenkstätte Busmannkapelle) is a building in Dresden. It is a reconstruction of the Busmannkapelle and has been under construction since 2009 (with completion planned for 2011), though planning began in 1995. It is a memorial to the Sophienkirche, lost in the bombing in 1945.
Busmannkapelle
The Busmannkapelle was a side chapel of the Sophienkirche in Dresden. The chapel was built in 1400 when the Sophienkirche was still part of the city's Franciscan monastery. It was funded by the patrician Busmann family, who used it as a family and funerary chapel and after whom it was named.
Jakobikirche (Dresden)
The Jakobikirche was a High Rhenish Neo-Romanesque church built in Dresden between 1898 and 1901 to plans by Jürgen Kröger. It was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War and its ruins were demolished in the 1950s.
Franziskanerkloster (Dresden)
The Franziskanerkloster or Barfüßerkloster was a Franciscan monastery in Dresden, founded in 1272. Its church (with its associated Busmannkapelle) later became the Sophienkirche.
Russian Orthodox Church, Dresden
The Russian Orthodox Church of Saint Simeon of the Wonderful Mountain (Russisch-Orthodoxe Kirche des Heiligen Simeon vom wunderbaren Berge) is a Russian Orthodox church in the German city of Dresden. It was designed by Harald Julius von Bosse and Karl Weißbach and built from 1872 to 1874. It is dedicated to Simeon Stylites the Younger.
St John's Church, Dresden
St John's Church was a church building constructed in Dresden for the expatriate American community in 1883 to 1884. It was damaged by bombing in 1945 and demolished in 1959.
Zionskirche, Dresden
The Zionskirche is the name given to two Evangelical Lutheran church buildings in the Südvorstadt district of Dresden. The first, the Alte Zionskirche or Old Zion's Church was built by Schilling & Graebner from 1908 to 1912. This building was hit and badly damaged by fire during the bombing in February 1945. A temporary roof was later added and it is now preserved as a ruin, housing a lapidarium with 3000 sculptures.
Semper Gallery
The Semper Gallery or Semper’s Building in Dresden, Germany, was designed by the architect Gottfried Semper and constructed from 1847 until 1854. The long-stretched building in Neoclassical style closes the Zwinger courtyard on its northern side. It faces the Zwinger to the south; to the north it borders on the Theater Square (Theaterplatz) with the Semper Opera House as well as Dresden Castle and the Catholic Church of the Royal Court (Katholische Hofkirche).
St. Anne's Church, Dresden
St. Anne's Church (German Die Annenkirche) is named in honour of the patron saint of Anne of Denmark, Electress of Saxony. The original 1578 church was destroyed by Prussian troops in 1760 during the Seven Years' War. The new church was opened in 1769.
