Baumann's Cave
Baumann's Cave is, like nearby Hermann's Cave, a show cave in Rübeland in the district of Harz and is Germany's oldest show cave. The grotto was formed in the Devonian limestone of the Elbingerode complex as the Bode Valley was being shaped. It was discovered in the 16th century and was visited by tourists from a very early stage. Amongst its most famous visitors was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Rübeland
Rübeland is a village in the collective municipality (Einheitsgemeinde) of Elbingerode in the district of Harz in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt and, since 2004, has been given the additional description of Höhlenort ("cave site"). The sub-districts of Rübeland are Susenburg, Kaltes Tal, Kreuztal and Neuwerk. Since 1 January 2010, it is part of the town Oberharz am Brocken and has 959 inhabitants.
Hoher Kleef
The Hoher Kleef is a rock formation in Rübeland in the district of Harz within the Harz mountains of Germany. It is mainly composed of granite. The Hoher Kleef can be reached via a footpath. It lies only a few metres away from the Harzer Hexenstieg ("Harz Witches' Path"). An observation pavilion was erected here at the start of the 20th century, from which there is an expansive view of the village, the River Bode and the surrounding Harz mountains as far as the Wurmberg and the Brocken.
Galgenberg (Elbingerode)
The Galgenberg is a 506 metre high hill east of Elbingerode (Harz) in the Harz Mountains of central Germany. It marks the highest point on the row of limestone crags found there. The old Trock Way (Trockweg), which ran from Quedlinburg to the imperial stronghold of Bodfeld, probably ran past the Galgenberg immediately to the north. East of the hill lies the abandoned village of Erdfelde that was closely linked to Bodfeld.
Bodfeld
Bodfeld was a small royal palace or lodge that was primarily established for hunting purposes and, when the town of Elbingerode was emerged, for the administration of ore mining in the central Harz that underpinned the power of the Ottonian and Salian kings and emperors in medieval Europe. The term Bodfeld is also used to describe an area of forest that lies predominantly south of Elbingerode.
Trogfurth Bridge
The great Trogfurth Bridge was a historic cultural monument in the Harz Mountains of Germany that was blown up by the SS on 14 April 1945. The bridge over the River Bode, which was made of rubble stone, had been built in 1739/40 at the site of a ford - first mentioned in 919 - on the Königsstieg path through the mountains. The Königsstieg ("King's Way") was one of the oldest German military roads and trading routes and linked northern Europe with Italy.
