Rügen
Rügen (also lat. Rugia for easier pronounciation) is Germany's largest island by area. It is located off the Pomeranian coast in the Baltic Sea and belongs to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The "gateway" to the island of Rügen is the Hanseatic town of Stralsund.
Rügen (district)
Rügen was a Kreis (district) in the northeastern part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The district of Rügen was created in 1806 by the Swedish administration of Swedish Pomerania. At first it was named Amt Bergen, in 1810 it was renamed to Kreis Bergen. On 4 September 2011, Rügen was merged to Vorpommern-Rügen. The district was bordered entirely by the Baltic Sea. The nearest districts were Nordvorpommern and the district-free city Stralsund.
Thingspiele
A Thingspiel (plural Thingspiele) was a kind of outdoor theatre which enjoyed brief popularity in pre-war Nazi Germany during the 1930s. A Thingplatz also known as Thingstätte was a specially-constructed outdoor amphitheater built for such Thingspiele. They were constructed in considerable numbers during the early 1930s. An estimated 200 to 400 were at least in the planning stage in the period of 1933 to 1939.
Rugard
The Rugard, at 91 m above sea level, is the highest elevation in the central region of the German Baltic Sea island of Rügen. This push end moraine was formed in the last ice age and lies on the northeastern perimeter of the town of Bergen auf Rügen. There was probably a castle here from the 9th century to the year 1325 A.D. , in which princes of the Slavic Rani tribe resided. These princes ruled Rügen and parts of the adjacent mainland. The Slavic name Rugard dates to that period.
Nonnensee
The Nonnensee is a lake in the borough of Bergen auf Rügen, Vorpommern-Rügen district, in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is located northwest of the town of Bergen auf Rügen and is a very shallow lake. As a result, attempts were made as early as 1859/60 to drain the lake for agricultural land. Since about 1970 the lake was artificially drained and dried out. In 1993 the pumping station was shut and the lake re-established.
St. Boniface's Church, Bergen
The Church of St. Boniface in Bergen auf Rügen ist the seat of the only Roman Catholic parish on the German island of Rügen. Other churches in the parish are the Chapel of Stella Maris in Binz, the Church of the Sacred Heart in Garz/Rügen and Stella Maris in Sellin. The parish is the northernmost in the Archdiocese of Berlin and has about 1,700 members.
Ernst Moritz Arndt Tower
The Ernst Moritz Arndt Tower stands on the top of the Rugard, the highest point of the central region of the German Baltic Sea island of Rügen. It is listed as a historic structure by the county of Rügen.
Bergen auf Rügen Abbey
Bergen auf Rügen Abbey (German: Kloster Bergen auf Rügen) was a monastery for Cistercian nuns established on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen. It lasted from the end of the 12th century to the early 16th century as a Roman-Catholic monastery and then, until 1945, as an Evangelical aristocratic nunnery.
